They want to buy a bunch of training ammo so they don’t have to use up duty ammo? Sounds good to me. Can’t blame 'em for spending a few dollars to save a few more.
I think people forget that Border Patrol, ICE, CBP, Coast Guard, and some other agencies vital to our protection are part of DHS. Together I can imagine that they use a lot of 5.56 ammo, which I imagine costs less when you buy it 62m rounds at a time.
Fear mongering in my opinion, is all this is. That is point one. Point two, it is over 5 years, so really it should be readying 12.6 million a year, more likely up to that amount per year, not actually the full amount, though I have not sat down and read the entire contract, but the last, “The gov is going to start shooting people cuz they buying 100MILLION bullets!” was that way. Point three, how many agencies are under DHS now? I know FLETC is if memory serves, and they train a lot of people, and I am sure don’t want to deal with situations where they can’t get ammo, especially after the shit some places went through after SH. With patrol rifles becoming more wide spread this really shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that they would try to secure a supply should something happen, and to do so at a savings shouldn’t be a bad thing.
And before someones wants to throw shit, I would be the first the want to call tyrants, tyrants, but throwing up false flags does nothing for us, or our cause.
Every LE agency, from the local municipality to the federal level has a carbine in the unit nowadays. Given the size and scope of DHS, their ammunition contracts do not surprise me.
That said, there are many who look at things like this and are convinced the sky is falling (again). I think the latest apocalypse daydream is Walmart closings signal impending civil unrest, so this will just exacerbate the fear and excessive hoarding will follow.
These are very rough numbers but…USBP has approx. 22,000 Agents who qual 4 times a year on the M-4 using approx 60 rounds per qual. 22,000 x 4 x 60 = 5,280,000. That’s just to do a basic qual for Agents…this doesn’t include the Academy (they shoot a lot) any of the tactical units (they shoot A LOT), re-quals or any other training. And that’s just the Patrol…now add in ICE, OAM, OFO, etc…
Correct. In addition to the agencies you mentioned, the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Protective Service (FPS) and FLETC, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Basically all federal LEO’s other than FBI and DEA do at least some of their training at one of the FLETC facilities (there four which have firearms training) plus FLETC provides advanced / inservice training for fed LEO’s as well as training to state and local LE. For example, I fired about 2k rounds at FLETCs weeklong LE rifle school.
People forget the scale of these organizations. For example, there are about 22,000 US Border Patrol Agents, all of whom are supposed to qualify quarterly on a 60 round qual course. So we need 240 rounds per year, per agent. Plus 4 mags worth of duty ammo, another 120 rounds. So 360 rounds each x 22k agents is 7,920,000 rounds. Now figure new trainees and special teams like BORTAC are going to fire more and MUCH more than 360 round each respectively so call it 8 million rounds per year for just this one agency. It adds up quick.
I for one am pleased that folks get practice ammo for their carbines. Especially folks that might need to use that carbine to save the lives of myself or my kinfolk.
