Destroyer USS Carney in action today (19 Oct 23)

Good shootin’, guys.

"A U.S. guided-missile destroyer took out three land attack missiles fired from the shore of Western Yemen on Thursday, U.S. officials confirmed.

USS Carney (DDG-64) “shot down” the three missiles and a number of drones from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, according to Pentagon officials."

Seems like a pretty big step.

From what I read, the missles weren’t targeted at the US ship. Still not good, since the target was probably Israel, but not like they are targeting US ships. Let’s not Gulf of Tonkin this one.

Haven’t heard anybody saying the US ship was targeted.

I’m surprised they didn’t target the launch site. Might as well, if you’re gonna shoot them down.

They were coming out of Yemen, not a country we might be looking at to kick their ass. Now you delve into the Iranian proxy thing and it could be a pretext, although I highly doubt it. Xiden and his pussy regime aren’t gonna get forceful with anyone, unless it’s Russia! Certainly not China or Iran.

To address an earlier point someone made, no it does not appear that the U.S. ship was the target. That said, good practice and no doubt VERY valuable feedback the Navy will be looking at closely in the missile/drone era of warfare we are in.

So kill the guys that launched something that wasn’t even aimed for us? Why would we commit to WWIII for that?

Was headed for us or our ally.

Yeah that was my thought. Blocking punches gets old after awhile.

I know nobody really wants to go back to the ME, especially since nobody seems to have the resolve to do things decisively, but the answer isn’t to fight a defensive war only. Sooner or later something gets through and people die.

When we put our assets in the region, we entered the game. Anyone with half a clue should have known that somebody, somewhere would fire on us or take a shot at Israel right in front of us. So might as well start playing the damn game, a counter battery strike should have absolutely been the response.

If a hostile unknown points a gun at you, you draw and neutralize the threat.

This isn’t one threat, this is numerous. They didn’t point a gun at us, they pointed it at a friend who was already being engaged. And unfortunately, there is more to it than that. Biden does not have the same reputation in the international community that Trump did. When we smoked Soleimani, there weren’t numerous state supported VEOs already engaging in large scale open conflict. Russia, one of our largest competitors over the past several decades, had not invaded Ukraine over a year prior. The world has seen our foreign policy, watched the abysmal withdrawal from Afghanistan, and has felt emboldened ever since. Biden just now trying to flex and regain strength is doing it from a heavily perceived position of disadvantage. Best case, we’re hoping no one is willing to see if we’re bluffing. But the last several years has been them calling our bluff over and over again. Going kinetic at this point is an extremely dangerous proposition and we’re a very short step away from talking shit and throwing some rocks to an all-out life or death melee on the world stage.

Oh, I agree with you on Biden’s incompetence. I’m saying, we’re there, projecting power. When they get froggy, we need to remind them why we’re the baddest MFers on the block. Either that, or go home and let Israel do what it needs to do. We’re dealing with people who only understand violence. Show them we speak that language fluently.

The Xiden oligarchy does NOT speak that language at all.

They only speak the language of weakness, and incompetence. It’s absolutely pathetic.

I get all of that. And yeah, it’s scary that we has a feeble minded president that nobody takes seriously. But we are where we are, military commanders in theater should have enough discretion that it doesn’t have to be a bluff. If this whole crap storm is going to go wide, it’s going to happen regardless of what Biden wants or thinks, the only question is how decisive are we going to be when we start getting directly engaged because this one was just a test of resolve.

Nobody pops caps with a US destroyer in the water by accident.

Seems more like a test to find out what the destroyers will/can do.
It a long way from Yemen to Israel and the flight path doesn’t need to coincide with our ships.

I assume those weapons can be redirected in-flight to provide an indirect attack.
How similar are they to the drones that were used to strike the Saudi oil refinery?

This ^

Wise words. I hope people are taking them to heart.

But in all honesty we haven’t spoke that language in my lifetime.

We have played paddy cake with other countries, but flexing muscles hasn’t been done since the mushroom clouds over Japan a loooooooong time ago.

They need to say eff the pansies that want to continue talking nicely and wasting money/lives and either turn the area into a parking lot or just go home.

I wonder how much money the Bidens will send to Yemen now? We’re almost living in “the mouse that roared“.

I get why they went weapons free. The missiles we not moving away from or parallel to the ship; ostensibly, the captain and his people thought they were either an imminent threat or an outright attack. In either case he did the right thing: proportional response and unassing the area.
