I have a Savage MkII with a 3-9 Nikon, picked it up with the optic for $200. With quality ammo I typically manage <1.5" for 10rd groups at 100yd… sometimes sub-MOA, sometimes worse. This is off a bipod (that came on the rifle)/bench, no bags. It takes good ammo to do that in an AR, if I’m using 193 I don’t tend to shoot that well even off bags (although I don’t have that long of an optic on an AR yet).
I would love to read something definitive about a receiver upgrade. I have a Colt 6920 I have been slowly upgrading. It has a White Oak barrel and an SLR gas block. I’m getting .75-1.25 MOA with Black Hills. I’m very happy with it but would a MUR1A and a YM BCG give me measurable improvements?
just my opinion and there are a bunch of them out there but here we go
1" 100 yard groups with store bought ammo. I would say that it pretty good for an ar. I wouldn’t get my feelings hurt about those who claim to have 1/2" ar’s. Look at the MOA challenge thread and see how many have been successful and what they were shooting.
You didn’t say what barrel length or profile you white oak is but to build an AR that will shoot consistent 1/2" groups you are going to have to have at least a 20" HBAR contour barrel. Makes for a very heavy gun. Really I would go for a Krieger 26" with a .92 muzzle. Barrel weighs 5#. Now that is when you start needing a heavy walled upper like the mur. When you hang a 26" 5# barrel off the front of it.
As for the bolt carrier group I like your choice but it really is not going to make any difference in accuracy
Now a nice Geissele trigger like the SSA-e will.
you might even complete the MOA challenge with what you have with some good reloads
I have an 18" SPR profile barrel with a 1:7 twist. I’m hoping to have an SSA-E in it before the next range trip. The stock Colt trigger takes some serious effort to manage. I’m also switching the buffer system over to a Vltor A5. I’m just not sure the receiver and BCG upgrade would really give me anything more. To be honest I might be at a skill barrier rather than a mechanical barrier.

if you really want to get ultimate accuracy out of your rifle you have got to start reloading. It is really fun testing different bullets, powders, loads and seating depths trying to find that magic combination. and that just scratches the surface on reloading
I’m pretty comfortable behind a bolt gun. I have needed to start reloading for some time. The place I just moved to has a good 100 yard shot in the backyard so I will probably get setup to load sooner than later.
At what torque did you start to see a decline in accuracy? How did you test this?
Elsewhere how? You can get Mega heavy duty billet uppers for $130…OP, I asked this before in here and got nothing. After doing months of research, I have concluded that something can be said for running a quality billet upper for a precision build. Whether or not this is tangible, who knows. I’m in the process of rebuilding my WOA 20" precision build that came with a crappy forged upper, and using a billet upper receiver instead. I will be posting my latest results in the MOA challenge thread if you’re interested.
