I am going to get a 7.62x39 upper for my AR.
Does anyone have experience with the Del-ton upper in this caliber?
I have read all of the other 7.62x39 upper posts, but none of them seem to mention anything about the del-ton uppers.
Delton is bottom dwelling garbage. 7.62x39 AR’s generally don’t work well, regardless of manufacturer. KAC tried this a long time ago and abandoned the idea. If you want a quality 7.62x39 id get an Arsenal.
so far that seems to be the general consensus on del-ton in general. So far most of the problems seem to stem from ammo selection though.
I rate Delton a 4 thumbs up buy. Afterwards come back and let us know how that whole thing works for you.
:haha:
I have a buddy who insisted on a 7.62x39 AR & bought a used DPMS despite my advice to just get an AK if that caliber appealed to him.
I’ve been along on several outings and can say with conviction…they suck.
To each their own.
I ran into a guy at the local range that had one of those abominations. NIB DPMS garbage, couldn’t keep it on paper at 20 yards (the sight was some cheap chinese knockoff shit, I didn’t bother to check the name), constant FTEs.
OP: if you want to shoot 7.62 Soviet, shoot it in a weapon that was designed around that cartridge. If you want an SPR-type AR in a non-5.56 caliber, there are other calibers that will work much better than 7.62x39mm.
5.45x39 is a better option. not perfect but more reliable than 7.62x39.
I have contemplated it, but am trying to avoid adding ANOTHER caliber to my storage safe!
Just for shits and giggles I’m going to throw this on here.
My 10.5" uses a Delton barrel which my friend, who works for a local AR manufacturer, chopped and threaded for when I decided to go suppressed. So far it hasn’t malfunctioned with a suppressor, and I’m waiting on my c3 to get their hands on the new YHM 762 Ti. I am using the LMT upper that was cerakoted about 2 years ago.
I’ve put 2300 rounds downrange with it and nothing has blown up, and accuracy is good. 4 failures to fire in the last 2000 rounds, attributed to an old batch of ammunition. 1975 I believe. It eats up the Yugoslav M67 from the 80s perfectly.
25yd:

50yd:

100yd 10 shot group wasn’t photographed, but it was about 2x4" so acceptable considering I was using a 22 year old Aimpoint 2k with a 4moa dot. It was also windy that day.
Feedramps need to be polished up, and it runs extremely well considering 2000 of those rounds downrange have been 1974-1986 vintage Yugoslav M67. Mildly corrosive.

This is the gun:

9.5lbs loaded with 30rds
30rds of 123 is slightly heavier than 30rds of 62-77gr, and the mags come from ASC and are sold at AIM Surplus for $16ea. $102 shipped for 150rds of yugo m67 and 4 magazines.
You can run this in an AR if you want to. I chose to because I hate the ergonomics of an AK. Plus since I have an SBR stamp on my LMT lower, I can have as many short barreled uppers as I want. If you want a shorty AK, that’s it. Nothing else unless you want to pay for another stamp.
Over 2100fps from a 10.5" barrel. It is 20% slower than a 62gr 5.56 but twice the bullet mass. And it cost $0.19 to shoot.
Look to Harrison at AR Performance for what I’d consider the best 7.62x39 AR uppers out there. LMT also makes an enhanced bolt, but Harrison’s will use a stock 5.56 firing pin.
Mine:
LMT upper and lower (Form 1 SBR)
LMT BCG, Model 1 Sales 762x39 enhanced firing pin
Daniel Defense MFR, RVG
TLR-1, MBUS
Aimpoint R1, DD lower 1/3
SOPMOD
H2, LMT buffer spring
KNS FCG pins Gen 1
YHM 762 QD
ASAP
ASC 30rd SS mag
With the stock collapsed it is 29" long, and if I put a Vltor Modstock on it I can get it to 28" collapsed.
Thanks for sharing LMT! beautiful gun. what mags have you found to work the best?
Thank you YZ for the compliment.
Definitely use the ASC mags. Springs feel stronger to me compared to the CP mags I was using. If something doesn’t work though, I get 30rd AK Wolff extra power springs from Brownells and have had no issues with those either. I haven’t replaced an ASC spring, though—some CP mags have needed replacing. There are several springs in the shop which are of varying length so I imagine I picked up on early runs and late runs. They’ll be good for replacing on the 10rd mags though.
Since we’re saying that a bargain company thought of as being on the low end doesn’t do well, will Bravo Company ever put out a larger caliber upper so that we can get one from them instead?
very well put on Delton ! i got a Delton 20’’ upper as a gift -they say wilson barrels are used but mossburg makes all the barrels for them for the last 4 years now --cuss words on the barrel the rest was not bad so its now has L/W barrel plus up-grades …delton just assembles bits and parts so watch out !!!
I own a Del-ton and the only reason I own one is cause a friend of mine owed me some money so he gave me the rifle. Now I thinks its ok but I wouldn’t want it in a life or death scenario. Its a piece of shit. not even worth the 600 bucks he owed me. But for a beater and a once in awhile shooter yeah its ok. It’s one of those rifles you can own and say you have an AR but really its junk. Hence why I am saving for a real rifle. It got me back into AR’s again. But made realize that Quality over Quantity is what really counts. Cause if you have a Quality rifle you can send the quantity down range and not worry about a thing. So I told Santa he’s buying me a Colt for Xmas or I was gonna beat him to death with my Del-Ton.
Are you haters even aware that most companies buy their barrels and bolts from just a couple of manufacturers?
How many of you haters actually tried a 7.62x39 AR to have actual first hand experience to base your opinions on?
I have a Model 1 Sales ( another so called bottom feeder) upper that runs 100% with CProducts/ASC and USA Franken mags. I use an AR Performance enhanced bolt with no mods to the uppe or feed ramps. My son shoots it every weekend with zero issues.
I’ve also built over 20 uppers with Delton parts and not a single upper has ever been returned for any reason.
What he said.
I know a guy who loves to tout that the cheap shit brands are “just as good as”… He ends up spending twice as much in the end.
Dear TangoChaser,
I’m glad you never let facts get in the way of making decisions.
Has he run it hard yet, like through something like a carbine class yet?
How about those 20 uppers…any of those been run hard?
Wait a minute…where did the fourth thumb come from? ![]()
I guess I fall into the hater crowd. There is a reason everyone says if you want to shoot a Soviet round, shoot it in a Soviet gun. Same reason that AK’s in .223 are prone to having problems. Obviously there are a few guns out there in each category that “have run flawlessly.” Based on experience, I will still call bullshit but whatever.
Haters will hate…bullshitters will bullshit. That is how Delton/M1S/DPMS/BM threads usually go.
I recently completed my 7.62x39 set up, I had had issues with it before, but after scrapping that MGI Military lower CRAP, it ran like a raped ape, 100% reliability. I had already decided that if it didn’t run with the new set up, I’d sell the barrel and bolt and build a 300blackout due to the similar ballistics, I’m very pleased that this will not be necessary because AimSurplus practically gives 7.62x39 ammo away:)
