Dedicated .22 upper or new 5.56 upper?

Got this itch to do something, need a little direction from friendly fellow EBR junkies.

Going to build a 16" gun for a chick. I figured I would go with a standard 16" LMT, already bought some pink furnature from Cav Arms. Already have a lower I am willing to devote elsewhere, commercial receiver extension inbound.

Then realised that a .22 upper from Spike would cost pretty much the same, but ammo would be super cheap and the GF wouldn’t have to deal with ANY recoil.

Figured I could train on the .22 upper as well, as I do look good in pink.

Thoughts?

I’m putting together another .22 since I sold my DPMS. Mine is mostly for the 10 year old. As such, I am going cheap, light, and trying to provide protection from the heat.

Using a 16" barrel, turned down if I can get Spike to do it. Putting a 12" YHM free-float lightweight rail on it. Using a fixed front YHM sight at first, and then we’ll “upgrade” to a tacpoint for him.

I was just talking with a guy at the Spikes booth and he said they are having problems getting Ceiner kits to use with his dedicated uppers and they are going to design a new kit in house. Needless to say they had no .22 uppers at the show but I did manage to pick up a couple of the new Blackdog mags along with a PMag.

Has anyone thought of tracking down a Ceiner kit and seeing if Spike will convert it for you? Just a thought…

I visited J A Ciener on Thursday and he has just taken delivery of some new CNC equipment to take care of some backlog orders. He also is taking “expidited” orders online for his AR conversion kit . I hope he gets up to speed soon and gets Spike back in action because I think Spike has a good product on his hands. If not I’m sure Spike or someone else will fill this niche . I think there is room for improvement on the orriginal Att. design but right now it is the best thing going.

I just had Spikes build me a dedicated upper for training cheap training, and its a great upper runs great with cheap walmart federal value packs.

He will do that.

A guy I know has a Spikes unit. He had to put some good effort into getting it reliable.

I’m just sticking to my 10/22 at this point. With my cheapo RDS it’s not as tactical, but It’s a lot more hastle free.

It may not be the Spikes upper. I have a Ciener kit that ran 100% with one lower and wouldn’t run at all with another lower. You could tell the mag was in a slightly different position in relationship to the kit.

I think he had to modify the feedlips a little. I believe he bought the modified ciener from Spikes. The ciener could have been part of the issue… I didn’t get into the details.
