Hey Guys! I need your humble suggestions. I am needing a new patrol rifle for work. Story is, I sold my S&W 15T (which ran great) patrol rifle to buy the new S&W 15TS. The reason I was looking at the new TS was the mid-length, new TRX troy battle rail, and all the magpul components that come with it. After talking to my good friends LMTrocks and Firemedic, they suggested that I pull my brand new 6920 out of the safe and use it.
So, now I am torn. Do I buy the new 15TS when it comes out any week now or roll out the stock 6920 and add some components to it and call it a day? If I was to use the Colt, I would like to either dress it like the TS with the TRX troy battle rail and remove the front FSB or go the “MOE” route with it and keep it simple with MOE handguard, VFG, and their illumination kit.
When it comes to the rail, the only thing hanging off of it would be a light, VFG of some type, and probably sling attachment. If it helps, we do not have rifle racks in our cars so it would deploy out of the trunk. Also, as I see this coming, my department doesn’t authorize Noveske or BCM. I know, I am speechless too. That would solve the problem ;). I work in a 650 man department that has the University of KY here along with huge rural areas that we patrol. My area is extremely diverse. So, what are your thoughts and or suggestions fellas?
Would an option be to have a midlength upper built up to your desired specs and mount it on your Colt lower so it “complies” (or atleast appears to do so;)) with your departments manufacturer requirements?
If so, thats what I would do instead of buying a complete new rifle. I really prefer midlength (or longer) gas-systems/handguards, and Jeff’s (USMC03) recent thread on the benefits of the middy AR for LE explains all of the benefits very well.
I’d say your first choice would be my pick. Iv got a MOE handguard for my Noveske n4 basic upper. Nice thing is you can add rails, and magpul makes a vfg that attaches right on the handguard, no rails needed. For the prices of a Troy you could probably buy a MOE+RVG+rails and probaby still have some left over for a decent flight light.
Hmmmmm, I have a brandy new Colt AR15A2 in the vault, thinkin I’ll leave it there. If I could buy the new S&W15TS with all the right goodys… I would in a NY minute. It’s a beauty and in my book, worth waitin a little bit for. The price is right…

Would you MOE it out with all the furniture including a VFG and illumination kit like the picture in the first post…OR, toss on a "11 or "13 inch Troy TRX battle rail after removing of the FSB??

Yank out that Colt, go to BravoCompany and get the DD 12.0 for under $200, your VFG of choice and a Surefire X300 and run it at 12:00. Doesnt get any better than that. Your right $500. Good luck
I’d much prefer the 6920 personally.
I also like simple and basic weapons configurations and have no real need for a rail.I’d mount the light to the FSB with a MI light mount and use the Colt barrel mount sling attachment with the Colt factory handguards.My overall personal preference.
Or should I say thats how I have my dedicated defense weapon,LMT 16" Defender,setup.
So far no complaints and has shown to be highly effective for my uses.
Actually, thinking of going back to stock on this one, and maybe later going SOPMOD stock and a DD 7.0 rail, but either way I would choose the Colt over most ARs if my life depends on it. Oh, and that Pony doesn’t like being locked up, let her out of the stable to go run!

Ive been curious about the MOE handguard for sometime and I see you have the Colt sling barrel mount.Does the front side extension of the MOE handguard cause you any issues with that sling mount?

DJEGATORS…, that is exactly what it would look like if I went that route short of a weapon light. It looks rugged and simple. However, you said you are thinking of throwing a rail on it. Whats your reasons. You have the “MOE” edition and now your going rail. Any suggestions or reasons?
PAPPABEAR…, the 12.0 has crossed my mind and it would save me some jack on cutting off the FSB. My only problem is that is a huge rail and a am worried it would throw the balance off a bit.

Blank: the only issue is there is no room for the sling mount to lay flat, which really isn’t an issue.
Kentucky: I may in the future go to a light rail, only to give me more options. I am also considering going back to stock configuration, as the Colt is great right out of the box. I am liking the Magpul, and will try her out at the range tomorrow, but so far it feels sturdy let fairly light.
I am sitting here trying to figure out comparing my options as far as price goes. How much is it for a gunsmith to remove the FSB for a rail if I decide to do that? I know ADCO and Gallery of Guns does it but didn’t list price.
I was wondering if the sling and loop would hang or bind.Sounds like its fine.I was considering trying one and the AFG to see if it gave a bit more position to the CAR length grip.Im a fairly large knuckle dragger so my hands generally flow over at the handguard cap with standard handguards.Might give it a go just for the experience.
