As per the title states, I am at a quandary as to what I should I do. Originally, I was in the market for a 5.56 PredatAR 16". Inquired yesterday to find out their was a 13 week lead time. Thus my decision opt out for the KAC SR-15 instead. With that said, I was going to purchase the KAC SR-15 today only to find out last night that a new carbine 16" 5.56 will be released by Knights after SHOT. Having said that, would you wait it out to see what they have to offer for this year or pull the trigger on the SR-15 now? As a point of reference, this will be my first AR. One of many! It will mainly serve as my HD/SD weapon, see occasional range time and hunting here and there. Please enlighten me with your humble opinions. Thank you kindly in advance!
I couldn’t be happier with my SR-15, but if I were in your shoes I might wait a few weeks to see exactly what is being released, especially if the integrated front sight is not something you want. But really, if you need a rifle now you won’t be disappointed with the current offering. Once the new rifles hit the market, it will be interesting to see the pricing too. Tough decision, good luck.
If I can toss in my $.02 I would suggest waiting till after SHOT before you make a purchase. We will be showing all the new systems, and SHOT is only 16 days away. Also we are trying to have the new stuff on the shelf same time as SHOT so turn-around is less.
Wait until after SHOT. No one buys anything new until after the show. Of course, most new stuff at the show is not available for a least six more months. In the case of S&W, it is usually a year.![]()
Buy an SR-15 now and then buy the new thing later too.
Fixed that for ya ![]()
You are correct. My mistake!!
I would wait for SHOT –
Greatly appreciate the input by all! In sum, I opted for the “Legacy” SR-15. Beyond complacent with my decision thus far and upon shooting her she is a confirmation of so. At the present moment I am in the market for a SR-25. Stay tuned for more as I will upload photographs of her before the days end.
Best
Without further ado.

At current I have equipped her with an Aimpoint T-1 2 MOA optic and a SureFire 600C Scout Light. Within the near future I will be adding a Knights Armament NT4 suppressor, Atlas bipod, Knights Armament Triple Tap muzzle brake, and other small Knights Armament accessories. Such as their, T-1 battery cap, optic mount, and hand stop. Sadly, she only has 5xx rounds through her but I am working on making it out to the range at least once a week. Enjoy!
Good day friends. I acquired a “Legacy” SR-15 at the beginning of the year and originally, it was reserved to serve the role as my CQB weapon. Therefore, I have installed a AimPoint T1 2 MOA red dot optic, Surefire Scout Light M600C, and a Harris BRM-S Bipod for occasional bench shooting. With that said, I recently received my SR-15 MOD 1 Carbine Wednesday of this week. I purchased the MOD 1 with the idea of slapping a 1-4 variable scope for paper shooting from 100-200 yards and the every now and than 200-400 yards plinking. At the top of the list is a NightForce NXS 1-4X24 magnified optic. Regardless of which weapon I will use, the Nightforce will be purchased. What I am needing from the collective is that if the CQB setup and precision setup is more suitable for a specific SR-15 system. Which is the “Legacy” SR-15 + MOD 1 that is in question. Below I am including a snapshot of the way my “Legacy” SR-15 is setup next to my MOD 1.

If I opted for the 1-4 variable optic on the MOD 1, I would remove the Harris BRM-S Bipod over to the MOD 1. As well, if the “Legacy” SR-15 was left to serve the CQB role, I would opt for a KAC Triple Tap Brake + NT4 QDSS suppressor. More or less, I have an idea as to what I will do, but before doing so, I would like input to make me decide otherwise as I am still relatively new to the game.
Thank you kindly for any and all input!
I ended up taking your advice ![]()
They’re pretty much the same identical rifles internally and other than the rail, they should perform just about the same. IMO, it’s a toss up for either one to serve as a HD or Precision rifle so, go with what you think is best I guess…
Only difference is the rail and gas block.
Barrels are the same. Replacing the A2 flash hider with a precision made suppressor mount Muzzle device will generally give you better accuracy.
I’ve also used a Crowning Tool on two or three shop SR-15’s to get a little more accuracy - you need to be careful as it can cut thru the chrome - which can lead to longer term wear issues at the muzzle - especially if you use a can.
My friends, thank you for your opinions. I forwent the idea of a variable optic for now until Knights releases their 14.5’ SR-15. At that point, I will purchase a Leupold MK 6 1-6x20. As you can see, I switched the AimPoint T1 and SureFire Scout Light over to the MOD 1. Last week I received my Trijicon 4x32 and it now sits on the “Legacy” SR-15. I must say, the Trijicon is an absolute delight to shoot! Especially considering my eyesight is rather lackluster. Stay tuned for more as I will make a few modifications to each within the near future (Triple Tap, NT4, et al.)!

Nice…I have a decent amount of trigger time behind the 14.5 and it’s definitely a rifle worth having…
I also have a TTB on two of my SR15’s along with two QDSS-NT4 suppressors and they are a great addition to an already awesome rifle…
My very first optic was a TA31 and I will agree that Trijicon definitely puts out a quality product…
The 14.5" looks like a champ! What optic was on it? Once KAC releases their 5.56 MAMS I will order a complete 14.5" Carbine and have it pinned and welded to evade the tax stamp. In the meantime, debating a SR-15 LPR with a NF 2.5 or a MAC-10!
Why doesnt KAC supply its rifles with a QD mount instead of a A2 from the factory in the first place?
Two main reasons:
- If we put a Muzzle Device on to mount a suppressor we would Rockset it.
- Many folks have their own muzzle device they want to mount, and would require to break the old mount off.
We have been debating fitting the new QDC mounts.
The sooner you guys get them out there the better, Im debating replacing my NT4 mounts on all but my older “clone” guns. Im ready for a QDC can when youre ready to sell them.
