After a federal judge ruled that the City of Berkeley could move forward with the clearing of the approximately ten-year-old encampment at Eighth and Harrison.
This follows an ongoing outbreak of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection which was being spread through the urine of infected rats and dogs, which made two people sick this summer, and one of them died.
Up until a 2024 Supreme Court ruling, many federal judges had relied on a lower-court precedent from 2018, Martin v. Boise, that had declared encampment-clearing and anti-camping laws to be cruel and unusual punishment under the constitution. That ruling was overturned in Johnson v. Grants Pass, in June 2024, which paved the way for all municipalities to undertake whatever measures they needed to in order to enforce local laws against blocking public rights of way, camping in parks, etc., in the name of the greater public good.
Ahh so becasue of “Feelings” it’s Okay to have a public Health Hazardon the Public Sidewalk?
We are simply way too tolerant of homelessness as a society. I don’t mean that to say we need to give them free shit, I am saying they are detrimental to society and we need to remove them from every area they infest.
Disease spreading among people living in close quarters and in filth and squalor? Wow, who would’ve thought?
I was working in Los Angeles, which at the time was the epi-center for TB.
We had eradicated TB, Measels, Mumps Rhubella By late 1950’s they too, like TB were all making a comeback. Of course someone immeadiatly began looking in to where all of this was coming from.
Well, it didn’t take a whole lot of investigation to figure out that the Illeagle Aliens coming in from El Salvador were bringing it in with them as they Migrated.North. And the bad News is you waited too late to change all of that, now we just had to deal with it.
Dealing with it however meant that the Hispanic Community would bear the Scarlet Letter of bringing in TB and we can’t have that. The decison was made to not advertise the findings and begin pushing Free Healthcare in area’s with a large Hispanic Population. But Do Not Under Any Circumstances link the new El Salvadorian Immigrents to TB.
So rather thand round these People up and deport them or Innoculate them or even test them, the decison was made to reamin quiet about it.
See, it’s the same situation, they don’t want to traumatize the Homeless by pointing out that they are now possibly Lepers.
In the meantime your Kid walks through that to go to School.
