DD V5 Light weight

Im looking for some advice, I am planning on purchasing a v5, and Im not sure if I should get a light weight or govt profile. I already have a carbine w/a govt pro, I was looking for something a little different. My question(s) are, is there any major difference other than weight and shape? Barrel life? do pencil barrels heat up much faster, is one more durable? Accuracy?

I thank you all in advance

I have had both V5’s and to be honest I never really noticed much of a difference in how they performed. Most of my shooting is done at 3m-100m. I personally like a lighter weight rifle so I would go with the LW if I had to pick one.

LW barrels do heat up faster but they also cool down faster since there is less mass to retain the heat.

just from a sheer metal mass standpoint, LW will heat up faster but they will cool off faster as well.

I have both a LW and a govt profile setup with DD 12.0 rails. The govt profile has a magpul ACS stock and my LW has a MOE stock with all other components the same. The LW setup weighs 11oz less at 7lbs 6.6oz with an eotech 512 and DD 12.0 OmegaX

Go with the LW. There’s no tangible advantage to the gov’t profile barrel, just extra weight.

Its going to be a nice long wait if you want a complete rifle and you plan on ordering. I just ordered a V5 upper from DD directly and was told if I wanted a complete rifle it won’t ship until at least mid-February.

I know there are a few distributors with some V5’s in stock if your local dealer doesn’t go factory direct.

…because they will reach the same temperature with less heat.

Go with the light weight barrel. The extra mass of the .gov in in the wrong place for heat control and balance

Yeah i gather, Im not in any rush, I plan to just order the upper and mate it with a dd lower at the shop. For me I cant order a complete rifle in 14.5 without them pin and welding it for a nice fee. My shop will do that for me at minimal coast.

LW, hands down. DD’s CHF barrels are ridiculously durable, and while a lightweight barrel may not shoot sub-MOA with commercial match loads (all I’ve tried), I’ve gotten 2MOA easily from very affordable ammunition, and I’m usually the limitation on that.

I picked one up from AIM on sale, I’ll probably send it off to ADCO in the spring to get shortened 1.3" and permanently attach the BC1.0 that’s on it now.

I was under the impression that the Lws shouldnt be cut due to the flange at the end. I was going to have my smith do some work on the flash hider along with the pin and weld we opted against it for suppressor reasons. I handled both his 14.5s Lw and govt pro, they were only .5lb different with T1. I think I am going for the govt pro, it much lighter than my socom barrel now anyways.
