DD OMEGA RAIL

XTMs fit fine over DD Omega and RIS II rails, both have the same size screws.

DD RIS II Mk18 rail:

I’m no gunsmith, and I don’t like taking things apart. So I don’t have any of the super cool free floating rails like the Larue or DD Lite. I have picked up two Omegas to replace my KAC RAS and RAS II. In terms of value, I don’t think there’s a better rail out there.

I use KAC panels, ladders and Magpul XTMs on my Omegas. The KACs I had to force on due to the aforementioned handguard cap interference. Someday I’ll go back and notch the handguard caps on my carbines to alleviate that. Or I’ll just switch everything out to the XTMs, which I’m really starting to like.

I have minor heartburn with the location of the QD swivel, I’d rather see it at the other end of the rail. But I can live with it, especially given the value it adds (goodbye $25 adapters!).

I’d like to see a version with a shorter bottom rail and side rails that stick out a bit more, getting away from the “oval” DD seems to like so much.

Overall, I’m very happy with the product. A real home run from the guys at Daniel Defense.

I cranked them down pretty tight, so that very well may be the issue. If my camera wasn’t already packed to go to Brazil I’d snap a few pictures.

They tend to slide on with minimal effort on the ones I’ve tried, but getting them off can be a little more of a pain. If the handguard cap flares more than on some models, I can see where it could be aggravating.

As already stated, not even a little bit of a concern with XTM panels.

My next stupid question. Do you need to use a standard slip ring with the Omega rail?

I’ll add my name to the “my XTM’s fit over the screws” list on both my Omega’s.

There is absolutely no modification needed to the host gun, all stock parts will work with the omega once the handguards are removed. It works really well so far for me. With regard to placing the QD cup farther out, I think that would be a bad thing on a 2 piece FF rail. A sling mounted further away from the delta ring area (the strongest part of the rail) would multiply the force on the barrel nut/rail interface. I’m not saying the Omega couldn’t take it, it’s just my experience with long rails makes me dislike the added leverage with a sling mounted that far out.

Just used hand pressure. They were tight, but not so much that it required a bfh or anything.

They come just short of contacting the caps. I’ve used them with both round end caps and triangular caps with no fit issues at all.

spam,

Since the barrel is stripped then I will need to buy a slip ring assy. in order to secure it to the upper receiver correct?

Oh yeah, most definitely if you have a stripped barrel. I must have missed that detail. Sorry. If you’re just dropping it onto an existing gun, they require no additions. You’ll need a standard barrel nut assembly including delta/weld/snap rings. The omega mounting flange actually grips onto the barrel nut teeth like a set of standard hand guards and is held fast by some hardened cup tip set screws. Once assembled and torqued down properly, you’ll need angry silverback gorilla strength to torque it over. I tested mine with a shorty Bobro vfg and really reefed on it while it was in my upper receiver vice block. I couldn’t move it with much more force than a vfg was likely to see in normal use.

Grant,

I ordered one in FDE from you yesterday 12/21/08. Nothing came up that prompted me that it was out of stock. Could you please let me know if you indeed have it and are shipping??

Thanks
Mike Rosamilia

Grant sold me on one for a Noveske build and it’s been great. I was skeptical at first about durability- but it’s holding up well to moderate abuse so far.

As has been mentioned, it is very slim across the beam. I like it a lot. Light, rock solid, simple and very low-profile.

2 thumbs up.

im getting a 12 at the end of the month. I can’t wait.

I am going to give this a bump … anyone have any long-term ‘I used the hell out of it and …’ experiences they’d like to share … particularly anyone using it on-the-job?

Really drawn to the simplicity of it …

TY!

I have 3 DD rails and like them all. My 7.0 and 12.0 FSB are very solid and like the Oval shape. I have one on my Middy with the front Sight base cut out.

One thing I have noticed with the shorter rails. Less real estate but handle better. Its nominal but you can feel the difference. Even my Colt 6940 is pretty heavy, however it handles like a lighter weight gun because all the weight is central.

I’m a big fan of the 12.0 FSP. If they did put that rail out in the Omega configuration it would be huge. It’s nice having that real estate for a white light or whatever. Looks nice too.

An omega set for a mid length with the FSP cut out would be quite the deal… Love my omega 9 sets though.

You have an Omega midy with a FSB cutout? Is this some custom work you had done?

Exactly! That right there is the dream rail for me. 10" or 11" Middy FSP cutout. I’ve irresponsibly thought about butchering a 12" for one.

I would like to see one as well. But I am sure they will have one out in no time. It would always be cool to cut a 12" down though. Rifles and rails etc, everything I have from DD is good to go.
