Do all DD rifles come with a plastic dust cover now?
Yes.
I have a new V7 upper that came with the plastic dustcover. I use this upper at work as an LEO. I have zero issue with the dust cover, or with the concept that it’s plastic.
Also if you send your rifle in for warranty work with the old dust cover it’ll come back equipped with the new plastic one, and the old one in a bag.
I don’t care though, I actually like the plastic one better.
Right… I too have no issue with it. The HK416 has a polymer one as well from what I’ve read. Just wasn’t sure if all new rifles were outfitted with them. Thanks…
Oh yeah, I heard there were layoffs down there and that their QC was slipping. Internet forum bullshit or reality? Money is on BS but gotta ask if I’m gonna pick one up when finances allow.
I’ve had mine for a while now and it came with the plastic cover, I don’t think this is a new thing.
Yep…I like it personally, especially for lightweight builds
From what I’ve gathered the part about limited layoffs is true while the rumors of QC slipping are BS.
While, they’ve had issues around the different colors of cerakote, and a few issues with the fit of the stocks, pistol grips and handguards, most of these issues were worked out post 2014. The internet likes to talk about porting size with DD rifles, but other than their 10.3 MK18 uppers, the Mid-length gas systems are the same porting size as BCM per this site and a few emails for verification purposes. I have no experience with the plastic dust cover but the BCG and Barrel are the important important things to a rifle and DD does both exceptionally well.
I see no downside to the polymer dust cover. It’s lighter. Less expensive. Won’t corrode. Does the same job as the steel part.
Not like it’s a stressed part or bears any load.
As an added bonus it’s softer than the aluminum lower so when it whacks open it won’t mar the finish on the lower.
I’ve always just preferred the metal dust cover, but I just thought of a benefit of the plastic one. If you’ve ever jammed your index finger into the dust cover, with it sliding under your fingernail, a thicker, more blunt, plastic dust cover would probably hurt a lot less.
Bingo. This guy gets it ^ .
