Is it possible to install a Daniel Defense Lite Rail 12.0 FSP on a barrel with a standard pinned front sight block (FSB)? The FSP rail has a cutout at the carbine-length position, but unlike DD’s Omega rails the Lite is a single piece hanguard. You would have to fish the barrel through the handguard and the loose FSB together, and then figure out a way re-pin the FSB while the handguard is in place.
It would be simple to install over a gas block that uses set screws. But what about a standard pinned front sight block? How the heck would you support the barrel to drive the taper pins back in? I guess you carefully support the side of the FSB against a dowel or something, but it seems pretty sketchy compared to using a proper armorer’s block.
I just bought a lite rail from DD and they have the instructions on how to do it.
But basically goes like this.
install barrel
put the rail mount on
install the new barrel nut
tighten new barrel nut to 50 - 75 ft-lbs
slide rail on, but not completely
put FSB in hole then slide things together
line up pins, push them in slightly
tighten rail
and then you can go press the pins in of tap them in regularly.
Hope that helps, I wish I had a scanner, would send you the instructions.
I quickly figured out that is what was needed for the M4A1 RISII FSP. The unit that I picked up was used, and came with no instructions. However, it really wasn’t difficult to figure out. I was hoping that the rail could be installed/removed without pulling the FSB off once the locking collar and barrel nut were installed.
It looks as if the DD Lite FSP has a heck of a lot more relief cuts for installation/removal of the FSB pins. The RISII hardly has any. Anyone ever install the RISII FSP?
All I’m missing is my gas tube, once that arrives from Bravo - it’s off to finish the assembly.
Its really easy to install, the only thing you must have is the DD barrel nut wrench to do the install, the new barrel nut is completely different so make sure you purchase the wrench with the rail otherwise your pissing in the wind and wont be able to do the install
Yeah, the RIS II bottom comes off, its not one solid piece like the lite rail is so punching ths FSB pins is not a problem, otherwise its the same install as the literail
Figured that one out. I was just a bit concerned that the RISII doesn’t offer as much relief cuts. With the bottom rail removed, the installer is able to get to the FSB pins, but some punches might rub up against the top rail (tightened or loosened). Regardless, I was able to get the FSB pins in there without any damage.
So I guess once you have the FSB and rail slid back over the barrel, you carefully get one taper pin started, then support the opposite side of the FSB with a dowel or something as you drive the pin the rest of the way in.
My only reservation is that supporting the FSB with a dowel doesn’t seem nearly as secure as using an armorer’s block.
My M4A1 RISII was purchased used, it did not come with any instructions. However, I did have a set of instructions from an Omega-X 12.0 FSP laying around, and the quoted barrel nut torque specs are 50 - 75 ft. lbs… I went ahead and torqued the nut to ~70 ft. lbs., and hope that the torque specs are not different between the RISII and Lite/OmegaX.
your Going to have to knock out the pins on your FSB and take it off
To swap out the barrel nut and to remove the dust plate on the back of the FSB rail which does not clear the new rail. other then that toque to 70Lbs and go to the range and fire that beast and take of the rail to re-check your torque settings.
I just bought a set of these used (DD Omega Lite 12.0 FSP rails) - my FSP and F/H are off - I’m ready for the install, BUT… have no instructions (the down-side of “used” :o).
My question is, once the new collar is on, I note the rails snap on AROUND it, BUT… how does it stay in place (i.e. - not rotate AROUND that collar). I BELIEVE all the pieces, screws, WRENCH, etc. are included, but is there something that should attach the rails to the collar?
Pics are GREATLY appreciated (paging Stickman, if you can hear me!!!)!
