I’ve built about 4 ARs and usually use 5.56 NATO, NP3 Plated BCG from Wilson Combat. I decided to try the DD chrome BCG for this recent build. I went to test fire it and the BCG kept sticking and would not load the 2nd round after firing. After struggling with pulling the charging handle back to lock the bolt back, I cleared it and reloaded. Fired 3 times, then locked up again. Took it apart and relubed the BCG. Loaded it up and shot 10 rounds and locked up again. So I removed the DD BCG and installed the NP3 plated BCG from my other rifle and it ran flawlessly. My question is, is there anything I should be looking at with this DD BCG that would be causing this malfunction. It’s obviously the BCG but I’m not sure where to start to fix it. Should I just ditch it?
You need to try and determine what is causing the BCG to stick. If you stripped the bolt carrier down and put the the bolt carrier by itself into the upper does itanyone move freely? Do you feel any binding on the gas tube at all when it meets with the carrier key? Once you have it reassembled do you notice the cam pin is sticking. Are the lugs from the bolt possibly sticking in the chamber? These are the things that you should be checking to help figure out what is going on.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. It seems like everything moves freely when I charge it with the handle over and over. I will do what you suggested and see if I can locate what’s wrong with it. Thanks for pointing me to spots to check
I did what you suggested. The only difference between the 2 BCGs is that the lugs are a bit more snug in the chamber. It frees up when I pull the BCG out but not as easily as the NP3 plated one. Can that little bit of tightness cause my problem?
Daniel Defense doesn’t make chromed BCGs…?

If it truly is a DD one that got chromed, it makes sense that it sticks since the chrome adds thickness and has to be accounted for when it’s manufactured.
Good point. I hadn’t thought of that as I don’t remember who is doing what nowadays.

On DD’s website they list a chrome plated BCG. There is also a few vendors selling them. I would think DD would take the plating into consideration when going into production to have an in-spec BCG. I would contact DD to see what they recommend.

OP- definitely contact DD, they’ll make it right.
I got a DD hard chrome BCG, It works fine, but when I first installed it I did notice it was a little tighter when running it by hand. A few hundred rounds later shes still tight yet smoother and running fine.
I was wondering myself why they discontinued them.
I highly recommend contacting DD. Their customer service is fantastic and I’m sure they’ll either find the problem or make things right.

If you have someone that can check the Bolt Lug dimensions, with a Micrometer, once in a great while they are just a little off… Especially when Chrome is applied…
I had a Bolt that was .003 larger than my others, and would cause inconsistant malfunctions… These would increase as the Bolt and chamber area would heat up…
I don’t think I would have found the problem with the Bolt, if not for the help of another Armorer, who was also a former Machinist… He was able to determine the difference in the bolt.
I also have a chrome DD BCG but it hasn’t been fired yet. Going to tag this thread to see what DD says.
Talked to Matt and he wants me to send it back in. I told him I wanted to run it in a couple other ARs I had before I send it in. He said go for it if I wanted to and to let him know what happens. So I’m going to try and get out this weekend.
Going to take out the Bolt Carrier Group today. I decided to give it a sonic bath and re lube last night. Shouldn’t make a difference but why not. I have another build to shoot it with and a factory S&W M&P AR15 to run it in. I plan on taking some video of it as well.
Has it eaten/destroyed any gas rings?
As of yet, no. I’m keeping an eye out for that. I did run the hell out of it in 2 ARs and decided to try it in the one that I had problems with. It ran flawless. The only thing I can think of that originally could be the problem is that I tried using Froglube for the first time with it. Maybe I had it gunked up or something. When I stripped it this time, I decreased it with slip2000 and lubed it with slip. Ran great after that. I don’t think Froglube is for me
I have a DDV5 upper. I bought a chrome Young’s mfg M16 BCG recently. The bolt is very tight in the carrier. Comparing the DD BCG, the YM’s gas rings look like they are loser and stick out more (hope that makes sense). I soaked it in EWL and hand charged it about 100 times. Seems to be loosening up some. I have not shot it yet.
I wanted a shiny BCG and saw those DD ones. I was confused because the Brownell’s were semi-auto, but the chrome DD’s on DD’s website were full auto. I called DD and they were at a loss for words about the difference.
Decided to stay clear. I’ll let you know how the YM works, I make have fallen for the All Things That Glitter Are Not Gold syndrome…
