On this day
An interesting bit O history for you y’all. The US trained for the amphibious landing for D Day at Fort Peirce FL, which was a 20K acre base, and the birth place of Naval Special Warfare, best known from that origin is the SEALS. The little known NCDU guys are truly the unsung and unknown heroes of D Day as without that small group of men, who has a casualty rate was over 50%, our forces would not have have gotten off those beaches without far greater casualties. The NCDUs only existed for D Day and The Sicily campaign. Most know of the UDT and later the SEALs, few know of the NCDU and the incredibly important mission they had and the casuality rates they suffered. I had never heard of them myself until I started doing the tour guide gig. Great intel HERE but having learned of them, learned what I could since and met a few who have visited the museum.
So, not only is Fort Peirce FL the birthplace of NSW, it’s an important historical location to the over all war effort and due to being closed right after the war, few aware if it and the importance there of.
You have any favorite stories or little known units of D Day to share? They didn’t get a note on the closest safe space, they got this:
