I finished my custom AR build a little while back, but it still feels a little “bare bones” to me. I thought I’d post a picture and solicit a little feedback for ideas. The build is based off of an 80% lower, then I pieced together the rest of it. Right now I have a low-cost optic on it because I didn’t have the cash at the time to spring for an aimpoint or an eotech, but it seems to work ok for now. I’ve been thinking it would be nice to have a front handle and possibly a flashlight but just haven’t been able to find a look that I like. Appreciate any thoughts comments or suggestions that you guys might have.
You can start by moving the rear sight back a few notches, is that an nc star reflex sight? Id search for a used Aimpoint, if you search you can pick them up for cheap sometimes. You could change the grip to if you like, theres a ton of different grips out there.
The BCM keymod angled stubby grip is a no brainer. It’ll give you the fast attach ability to try it in different positions. From there… you can figure out where your front hand likes a light switch to be and decide on a light/mount combo that will feel best.
Regardless of your philosophy of use, I’d suggest getting a sling. Magpul MS3, MS4 (both can be converted to be 1 or 2 point) and the VTAC padded 2-point sling are my current favorites.
I’m not a fan of the A2 pistol grip, it causes me a lot of wrist-strain for some reason- Maybe try a Magpul MOE+, a BCM grip, or something similar. I find those to be much more ergonomic.
The sling sounds like a good idea, I’ll definitely look into it.
I agree with the A2 grip comment. I recently replaced the A2 on my 308 with a Tango Down BG17 and really like the it. For this rifle I’m considering a rubber grip ( something like the Ergo).
Unfortunately I’m in CA so no 30 round mags for me.
You can pretty much print off the rainier, WO, brownell or whoever’s grip selection pages, hang them on the wall, and throw a dart at them and land on a better grip than the A2. That said I’m not a fan of the Ergo, although the one I had was almost 6 or 7 years ago on a really terrible doublestar rifle. I like the UCWRG/B5 the best but you have to stipple them yourself. Also like the BCM. Again thats all personal and just about anything is better than the A2. Either gear scout or soldier systems did a pretty decent grip review a while back.
I would grab a sling, grip, a surefire, and a mount from the EE. That will save you some cash that you can put towards ditching that optic also.
I won’t comment on the fwd grip as I have bounced back and forth enough with changing rails and grip technique… Again the EE makes it a little easier. You could get a hand stop and a stubby from the EE for the price of one from a retailer.
Minimum, I’d get the sling and shoot with the BUIS for a while to get them dialed in and get used to them. Meanwhile, you can research an optic and take your time to save for a quality scope or RDS- optics are not something to cheap out on.
Sorry about the mag limitation. I share your pain there, at least for now. It does help save ammo… sorta. Drills and stages are a PITA though.
The custom build area is a place to show off/discuss and ask questions and get feedback about your completed custom build (this means a completed AR that is functional and already completed). If you are going to post pictures of your build, please post a complete picture not just your parts, partial lowers, etc…
Also, buying an upper separate and then a lower and throwing them together does not constitute a custom build. It would be nice if you took time to explain how you came to your decision and explain your set up. Thanks.
