Hey guys in the past I sold YHM products but stopped except for the Phantoms because of the old FF railed forearms. I have read they have been improved upon and no longer rotate etc. Their price point is low and in the past their quality matched. what do you guys think of their current stuff?
Well if you have had Yankee Hill non floater handguards rotate it is because you were using cheap, out of specification, delta rings and handguard caps.
Everybody likes to blame the big parts while overlooking the small parts.
Yankee Hill always has, and always will, produce some darn good products.
I use YHM Phantom flash suppressors quite a bit and have found that peel washers work best because of barrel timing issues and improperly made crush washers.
Yankee Hill sights are some of the very best on the market and you won’t have to miss a car payment to buy a set.
The anti-rotation screws mostly fix the rotation problems encountered by people installing them without the necessary tools.
I installed a bunch of the old ones and NEVER had one rotate.
When you heard complaints about them rotating, it was almost always from an installation job done without the correct wrench.
Even still, the anti-rotation screws are an upgrade.
If you can get it to rotate now, you did not install the barrel nut tight enough.
The same exact thing can be said of KAC, DD and many others that we don’t hear complaints about.
The actual machining quality on YHM parts is quite good.
Many don’t like the width of the YHM handguards, but that’s about all they have going against them.
They don’t follow ALL the specs, but almost nobody does on all 4 rails of a handguard.
The spec that almost everyone violates is the amount of free space UNDER the rail.
This is mostly an issue with TD VFG’s which actually REQURE all that the specs give.
Have you used the four small wire ties to hold down the 2 tabs?
You push down one end of one tab and insert the square end of the wire tie to hold down the tab. Repeat this for the other end and then the other tab. It may still fit a little snug on a YHM but just use a rubber mallet or plastic hammer and tap it to where you’ll need it. Once you find the spot you want it you pull the wire ties out and the tabs (by spring force) will lock into the rail.
This is something I’ve become intersted in as well.
I see this thread is a good year old…have things changed? Rails still typically out of spec?
I have big hands and wouldn’t much mind a larger tube.
Their lightweight tube weighs in less than the Troy, and just over the DD lite rail (unless YHM isn’t including the nut in their posted weights). My 1 concern is that the holes are very large on it…and I wonder if people are getting finger tips through those holes and getting burnt.
I intend to place a front sight, SF 6P or G2, and a stubby grip out front, and a sling mount in by the nut. From what I saw, the VTAC would end up costing more, and weight more by the time I placed 3 small pieces of rail on it.
We have the “old” FF rails on all 500’ ish of our carbines. They were part of the Bushamster package. They were assembled by Bushamster and sent us (before my time with this current company) and apparently they did a crappy job. I have had them rotate loose, and then when I tried to remove them and the barrel nut to fix everything I could get them loose. I agree that the adges are sharp as shit as well.
Do they work? Yeah, I suppose. Would I have bought them? No. But, I am not a bean counter when it comes to my weapons or kit.
I’d bet the farm IraqGunz and Co. are running with something close to, if not exactly, what I’ve got, and the YHM stuff on there is all being replaced with the exception of the rail.
Everything I’ve got mounted on it is rock-solid, but the rails are like razors, and the particular FF rail I’ve got weighs in pretty heavy.
