I just ordered a BCM lower from Grant, and I’m going to be ordering a stock for it soon. I’m trying to decide between the CTR, STR, and the SOPMOD. I’ve read where the friction lock on the CTR locks up tighter than the STR, which I would prefer, and the CTR is cheaper, which is also nice. However, the STR is more comfortable from what I’ve read, having a better cheek weld. And then there’s the SOPMOD which I’ve heard is very tight on the extension, which is a plus, but the price is the only downside for me. So I was just wondering what advice any of you guys might have, which you have, etc.
I suggest trying to find some of these you can demo first if possible.
I have a CTR on my SBR and like it but run a Vltor EMOD on my 16" AR and find it more comfortable. To me the EMOD and SOPMOD feel about the same but my preference is for the EMOD which also happens to be priced less too.
I have no hands on experience with the other.
AIM recently started selling the B5 SOPMOD stocks for $99 with free shipping.
I like SOPMODs and have one on the carbine I shoot all the time.
I have two Colts, both with SOPMODs. One is tan, the other is black. The black one wobbles almost as much as a regular M4 stock. The tan one hardly wobbles at all. Stock wobble has never bothered me.
I like the cheek weld on the SOPMODs and I recently aquired a VLTOR EMOD and it seems like a great stock also. I’ll try it out in a match Sunday.
I have shot with a CTR and it does not wobble, has a QD socket and a ruber pad. The cheek weld is about the same as a M4 stock.
I don’t know what an STR is, but if it has a good cheek weld, go for it.
IMO the CTR is too expensive for what it is. I’d just get the SOPMOD and be done with it…
I haven’t read any reviews of the str yet honestly, but I would not worry about the lock up. I’ve seen Grant mention that he prefers the moe stock cause it’s tight enough on a Milspec tube that a ctr is a waste of cash. After purchasing the moe I agree. So having any lock on top of that, regardless of how tight, should be good. The cheek weld is definitely a bonus plus the battery storage.
The B5 SOPMOD is pretty reasonably priced. Another good option is the Imod. Unless ofcourse you’re attached to the feel of Magpul’s buttpad(like myself), then I’d get the CTR. Dont worry too much about the wobble/lock up. If it bothers you, you can always put a strip of tape on the RE to tighten up the stock. That’s what I did when I had an Imod on one of my carbines.
Used all but STR. All are good stocks, prefer UBR, sopmod, ACS, for precision. Stopped using UBR because of weight. Probably best of adjustable precision stocks. CTR I did not like, crappy cheekweld, and did not lock up good for me(sent it back once). Love my EMOD too. Best of both worlds.
Can’t wait to get my paws on STR. Might be what I’ve been looking for.
Unfortunately the black SOPMODs are out of stock. I was about to have my decision made otherwise. Does anyone know when these will be back in stock? Or should I just e-mail them?
I’m also liking the Vltor IMOD stock. Does anyone know how tight the lock-up is on one of these? Col_Crocs you mentioned one being a little loose but fixing it with tape on the receiver extension, did that work well?
And also, I’m guessing the IMod would be compatible with having an ASAP plate on the carbine?
Imod lock up great. To be honest I think it is very under rated. Doesn’t cost much has great lock up, and has ability for additional storage
Ya, the Imod works with the ASAP. I’ve never tried it fully collapsed though but I doubt you’ll be running like that anyway or even one click out for that matter. I ran mine on pos 3.
On fixing the wobble, yes, definitely! On my A5 tube, my Imod had a little more wobble than a CTR with the friction lock disengaged. 2 strips of tape took it from that to tighter than my CTR with the FL engaged. I cut 2 strips of black advertising sticker about 2" long x .75" wide. Taped it around the tube starting at the bottom of the RE rail all the way to the other. Then I cut the second strip wider to tape over the first, covering its edges to keep them from peeling off when retracting or collapsing the stock.
If you are set on the angled check weld (which you should be), then look at the STR, ACS, ACS-L, and SOPMOD. Or the IMOD/EMOD stocks.
Really, I don’t think there is much difference between any of them, besides like nit picky things, its not going to change the way you shoot at all. I used standard M4 and fixed M16 stocks in the military for 10 years and it made no difference in my shooting after I got a SOPMOD equipped rifle.
I would just look at the features and the amount of storage you need. You don’t need to store EVERYTHING on the rifle.
I have an ACS now, and I don’t see much difference between it and a SOPMOD as far as the check weld. The battery storage in the ACS is much easier to use though. I have an STR on order, it may or may not replace the ACS on my duty gun.
Thanks for all of the input guys. I’m really leaning towards the IMod. I’m set on the angled cheek weld, and the possibility of having storage capacity is good, too. (which rules out the CTR) However, I don’t need the amount of capacity that the ACS has (or the EMod), the STR just looks bulky IMO, and the SOPMOD is the most expensive. While I like the SOPMOD, having had some limited experience with one, it costs more, and weighs more (unless I’m mistaken there) than the IMod. So I’m probably going to go ahead and order the IMod tonight. I can get it from SKD for $86 shipped, so that’s not a bad deal.
Thanks guys!
Imod or SOPMOD, both include the QD socket, the Imod adds options with the cheekweld adapters to remove the tubes if you don’t want them.
If it is a 16" gun and will have some weight up front, go EMod - no adjustable stock is as robust.
I have 2 SOPMODs and a CTR, I prefer the cheek weld of the SOPMOD.
I regret buying my CTR. I shoulda just bought another Vltor(Have 2 Emods)
I have a CTR and an Imod. I love my Imod, the cheek weld is so comfortable I could see myself almost falling asleep on it. Mine came as a kit so it rides on a vltor tube and fits the tube nicely. I might have settled for on of the older modstocks still floating around for $50 but CTR spoiled me with the rubber butt pad.
About my CTR, its a good stock, but Id recommend an MOE unless you require a stock mounted QD cup. Im not sure what tube its riding on, but it came as a kit from Grant, so its a good one. I barely use the locking feature on mine as it fits nicely. However my lock always pops loose during shooting. I havent heard of this happening before and it may be because of the paintjob adding just enough diameter to the RE to keep it from locking solid. Either way I dont care, its bought and paid for, obviously painted and I like it otherwise.
Imod rules in my book. Im currently searching around the house for precious metals that I can melt down to cast an idol of it :jester:
Yeah, I’m definitely about to order the IMod. I would go with one of the older Modstocks that bravo company USA on sale for $50 right now, but it doesn’t have the rubber but pad, and it’s not curved on the end, so I’m going with the newer IMod. For about $87 shipped from SKD that’s still not too bad.
