There is plenty of neck tension to hold that bullet in place.

Agrree…99.9% o the time the neck tension is enough. I have seen a few occasions where acrimp was necessary, but believe me…it was LIGHT.
A taper crimp should not shorten your brass’s life much as it is just pushing it against the bullet.
Neck tension is something you have to work with and test and make sure YOUR dies are expanding the neck just enough to leave good tension on YOUR brass and with your bullets. I would not trust neck tension alone without dialing your specific dies in to your specific brass and bullet combos.
