Hi like the title says I am in the process of building my first ar. I had a few questions for you guys. I am planning on building a 16" mid length Rainier arms match barrel with bcm bcg. I am ready to buy my receiver extension and am a little over whelmed in the selection. I am looking a bcm’s a5 system. Is this system pretty much the same as vltors a5? The other system I was looking at is bcm’s milspec carbine kit. In this kit would the regular buffer be a good choice for my barrel. I will be using mostly for shooting gophers and would like the softest recoil to see impact.

The BCM and VLTOR receiver extensions are both excellent.
The BCM is a little lighter and has 8 positions vs 7.
Either one is a great choice.
For buffers, I’d go with the standard VLTOR A5H2 due to the higher weight.
It has been proven reliable in many different configurations.
So is bmc’s a5 buffer lighter than vltors a5 buffer?
BCM and VLTOR A5 buffers are the same, the BCM kit just ships with a light H0, whereas the VLTOR kit ships with an A5(H2), which is going to be the ideal buffer for any properly ported barrel.

The Vltor kit comes with a standard AR rifle spring, which is fine. Lots of people use them. Others prefer the Sprinco Green Spring.
I figured if I was going A5, might as well go all the way and get the Speingco green spring. It seemed like there were more people who preferred that then the stock A5 spring. Who knows if it really makes a difference.

The stock rifle spring is fine. I’ve used a standard A5 kit with 10.3-20" barrels and never had anything but reliability.
I just put the Springco blue spring and Spikes ST-T2 to replace a standard spring and buffer in my mid-length. It’s a pencil barrel with lightweight rail, and it improved the felt recoil. I forget what brand receiver extension I am using. I don’t know if that helps your decision at all.
With the A5 H2?
Those Spikes buffers have terrible reviews.

Is it stiffer or lighter than a standard spring?
The best recoil spring you can get is a David Tubbs flat wire recoil spring. I have used them in all of the AR15`s that I have owned, and no other spring on the market can come close to it, as far as quality and performance.
