Correct riser hight for dot scope.

I have a Colt M4 carbine with the A2 front sight. I want to mount a red dot scope on the flat top but need a riser to raise the dot scope high enough to see over the A2 front post. Anybody know witch size to get. don’t want to buy more than I need to.

What optic do you have?
You have two options. Absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness when talking about mounts for aimpoints. If you have an eotech, iinm, larue makes a riser that brings it up to lower 1/3 from absolute.

Col Crocs thanks for your reply. Actually its just a cheap tube style red dot scope. Brand is “Famous Maker” I have it on a colt M4 22lr. As it sets right now I look through it and see the back side of the A2 Front site

If it is a 30mm tube you can pick up a cheap Aimpoint mount. Probably post in the WTB section and find someone selling theirs that has been replaced by a Larue or something

Hard to get a proper mount for a cheap optic unless it’s a “replica” or patterned off the more popular brands… kind of like PA optics are of aimpoints. It’s also hard to determine how low it sits now not knowing anything about your optic. Does the dot line up with the front sight or is it completely covered? Absolute co-witness means your dot is directly in line with your front and rear irons. Lower 1/3 means your optic is higher, putting your irons on the lower 1/3 area on your optic’s FOV. – excuse the lack of proper terminology.
On a side note, i’d save up for a quality optic rather than trying to make a cheap one to work.

Col Crocs . Its completely covered at this point. the sight itself came with rings and ready to mount on a rail all I need is to raise it I could deal with the 1/3 probably. and ya your right I need a better scope but as I saids this is my 22 lr version Colt my 5.56 version will be better equipped. I haven’t started on it yet.

My bad. I thought it came with your 22lr and youre moving it to your 556. In anycase, does it remotely resemble an aimpoint? I ask because if it does and it has a 30mm tube like tostado says, you could get another mount for it. Getting a riser will propbably bring it up to absolute or somewhere close, higher or lower.

Ohh… Looks like your only option is a riser. Despite it being 30mm, there’s nowhere to clamp a mount onto. I just checked and GG&G has one that raises it a 1/2". Not too familiar with risers. Hopefully someone will chime in and recommend a good one.

Burris makes a riser for about $15. Not too slick, but it will do the trick.

This is the mount I use:

It gets a 30mm optic above the front sight post. I like it so much I now use it on a carbine with no front sight post. It allows me to to keep my head up, I find i can run the gun fast when working up close. Of course it also works for distance off a bipod.

Gentlemen,
thank you so much for your help and input on this little issue of mine. you have answered my question. Col Crocs a special thanks to you for educating me a bit more than i was before this thread. Always good to learn something new.
