Constant double feeds

10.5" barrel, carbine buffer. The rifle is getting constant double feeds. With good quality brass ammo it’s every round or really close. With crappy Tula it’s every 6th or 7th round. Sometimes up to 10.

I’m thinking it’s because the buffer is too light. Any ideas otherwise?

Try a different magazine.

Tried 3 brand new pmags.

You CAN NOT run a 10.5 with a carbine buffer. Try an H3.

H3 for sure, new spring, (or at least a relatively new spring) and depending on your gas port size, that may even still run fast, but it should still run unless something else is wrong.

Yeah, brand new spring. This is the first time I’ve shot it. I assumed a heavier buffer was in order, just wanted to check first before I spent $40 more on this beast.

Thanks!

Any place have the H3s in stock? I’ve checked Rainier, Weapon Outfitters, Midway, Brownells, and G&R. No go.

DSG Arms has them in stock, $40

You are awesome. Any chance of getting some Indiana classes in the next year?

If there’s a host with the ability to fill a class, we can make something happen. We’re working on TX and WY right now, and the class schedule is admittedly light with the media projects we have to complete.

Do you mean a true “double feed” as in (2) live rounds attempting to feed into your chamber or do you mean an empty casing in the chamber that failed to extract and a live round feeding into it?

Who makes the barrel? What gas port size does it have?

The latter. I guess I should have been more clear. Casing in chamber, round trying to feed up into chamber. Sometimes the casing would be halfway out.

It’s a Ballistic Advantage 10.3" Hanson series barrel. I BELIEVE it’s a .077 but I’m not 100% sure.

You definitely a heavier buffer after this clarification.

This, and inspect extractor spring and inert. There are black and blue inserts, I forget which one is better. Someone else will know, km sure.

What’s likely happening is that the bolt is flying back so fast the extractor is slipping off the rim. Make sure it’s not bent either- I’ve seen that happen as well.

This not a double feed. It’s a different type of malfunction known as a failure to extract, often referred to as FTE.

The black insert is preferred. IIRC I read somewhere a while back that the blue ones aren’t even made any more, but I don’t remember where I saw that.

For your FTE, I would recommend this.

It is a good idea to run a heavier buffer weight too.

So, now we know a little more. Your buffer is too light to start. I recommend an H3 buffer. I would also recommend an extra power extractor spring as well assuming you don’t have one.

One other thing to check. Pull the carrier out, hold it straight up. Place a case in the extractor groove and straighten the case up depressing the ejector.
Slowly let the case lean(ejector pressure) then take your finger off. If the case hangs up on the bolt face the extractor may have sharp corners grabbing the rim of the case or pressing the case to the far side of the bolt face and not letting the empty case eject.

I don’t think this is going to be his issue. What you’re describing has to do with ejection (if I understand you correctly). His rifle is not extracting, so he’s not even getting to the ejection stage.

Mags.
