Considering first build

Im going to build myself an AR after coming back from “A” school. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. And if anyone could estimate how much my plan would cost??

Im trying to used a TA15BDW or POF billet lower, a VIS-2 upper, and a magpul UBR stock. I just wanted to get a pretty standard bbl and internal parts kit for the upper and lower.

About how much do you think it’d cost? Would I be better off just having MSTN or Noveske take care of it?

The sky is the limit on what is available to spend money on your rifle, and you should start out by setting some limits for yourself. There are already a million threads and posts that you can get a general idea of what’s the top shelf stuff, and there is a fantastic blog post by the tactical yellow visor wearin’ guru that could probably answer all of your questions. When I bought all the parts for my latest, I purchased an entire, assembled upper from Noveske, and couldn’t possibly be more pleased with it. I’d say just let the experts do their job, and take care of all the precision and technical things, and you just look forward to popping the pins in place and go shoot!

A school? Which branch?

The parts market is completely dry at the moment. You’re going to want to wait on a new build, else face severe frustration. MSTN and Noveske are months out on builds. Price? All depends. When you start dropping things like “UBR, VIS, ACOG” you’re probably talking $2-3k. Remember it’s the small things that get you.

Oh, and if I may suggest, instead of going with the blingy stuff, sink your money into a quality barrel, bolt carrier, and receiver. Ask yourself what is the weapon for and go from there.

I appreciate everyones help. I probably will go with an already assembled upper. Noveske or MSTN I think. I really want to use the VIS upper. It seems to be very quality and not too blingy. The Billet lower also appears to be very rugged and of good quality.

I really am not looking to invest in an expensive red dot or anything yet. The recievers aint cheap but the VIS cuts out having to buy a rail system. For now a VFG and maybe a light are the only add ons Im looking at. And not right away. THe UBR will be expensive but I really dig it and think its worth it. Seems to be quality.

After this hits $2k would it not be better to just but a POF piston AR or something like that??

No. Then again I’m not a big piston fan. Maybe on a dedicated weapon like a Masada (ACR) or SCAR, but piston ARs…meh…

Stick with a high quality DI system built to meet or exceed GI spec, it won’t let you down.
