Compact Scopes

Hey guys, I’m looking into compact mid-range scopes such as the Burris AR-332 and the discontinued Primary Arms Compact 4x. What are some of my options in this category, that being a compact scope with an illuminated reticule, for around the $300 mark?

It will be purely for plinking/target shooting, as I’d remove it at home and just run irons for home defense.

Millet 1-4x is your best bet, IMO.

You may want to take a look at this one from Burris:

It’s more expensive than the Millet, but I think the recticle is a great asset to have.

When matte black comes out in January, it’ll be on one of my rifles.

I like it. Can’t imagine why they would come out in dark earth before matt black.

For that price, you wouldn’t rather have the AR-332 from Burris and save some money? I own plenty of decent low magnification hunting style scopes like the DMS, I’m trying to find something shorter, more compact, and preferably lighter.

The Bushnell Elite 4200 1.25-4 x 24 is available for $320 delivered from Amazon. How does is rate compared to the others mentioned here?

You will not find a great deal of enthusiasm for the AR-332 on M4C.

Some of us held high hopes for the concept but found ourselves disappointed with the final product.

True. I get a pretty good discount through Burris and I’ve considered getting one for my .22 upper but…I just can’t do it. The fact that it is sourced from the PRC is the deal breaker for me.

The AR-332 is from the Philippines; not the PRC. If you want a scope from Burris for an AR, get the XTR14, 1-4X. Nice reticle, easy to use.

Sorry to turd the punch bowl but I have an email from Burris claiming that China is indeed the source of the AR-332.

The XTR does seem nice. I have concerns over it’s long term durability, though. For me it needs to be able to survive 13 months of bouncing and bashing inside/outside of up-armored Hummers and MRAPs while smelly dudes wearing skirts are trying to relocate some of my body parts. YMMV

I just mounted one of those on top of my BCM 16" SS410 mid length upper and will be giving it a test drive this weekend. Initial evaluation is positive. Compared to this new Burris model it’s (1) 1.25x instead of 1X; (2) has a German #4 reticle with a small illuminated dot and (3) is a few ounces lighter. Mounted in a LaRue mount, the whole thing weighs 22 ounces, which IMO is still too heavy. I’ll be posting a review this weekend.

I agree with the above post - any “tube style” scope is not going to be as rugged as an ACOG - regardless of how much you pay for it.

Id like to point out that A lot of S&Bs and Leupolds have managed to take much abuse in the GWOT and still “getterdone”.

ACOGs rock.

If you get the Millet and endeavor to use this as a range-only weapon, you will be extremely happy with it. If you have any thoughts of using your rifle beyond the static range, you may be less than thrilled. Mine went tits up fairly quickly… Bought a Leupold MR/T 1.5-5 and I am very happy…

The OP might as well get the Burris. Given his price point, and intended use of same, I think he should be okay.

Dang, that looks pretty nice! Anyone have one?

The Burris is probably better than a Millett, though I’m not sure if that is one of the lines made overseas or here. There is an XTR line which has a 1-4, made here and there are some decent deals on SWFA/smaplelist.com and at Midway (seem to have got a bunch of refurbs from Burris at decent prices).

I never could figure out the ranging of the AR-332 scope. Yes, I see the holdover points but the ranging seemed to take a lot of flexibility in figuring. Yes, I know, you’re supposed to be able to do it in your head and I can mostly but that one seems to be constantly changing.

One thing you have to accept - whether or not it matters is simply individual - is the sharpness difference between a prism scope such as the 332 and a “straight” optical scope such as the XTR, DMS, Tac, etc. A prism scope will not be quite as sharp as a straight scope. Not talking fuzzy and, not enough to matter as a practical matter but it may bother some people. Not even a quality issue. I have an ELCAN Spector OS3 - and, that reticle is perfect with simple ranging and holdover, and a US Optics SN4S. The USO is a tad sharper.

That’s my dilemma. I had the USO first but it has a fat eyepiece which would require me to get a different mount to clear my fixed AR sight. A folder would work - some requiring a small riser on the scope but not a lot. But, I have one of those “tactical handles” that RRA sells. Raised flat rail in front of a fixed sight. I like that for irons and consider it perfect for that use. However, I wanted a scope for better precision at 300 - 600 yards. (I’m 63, have good distance eyesight but, well, I’m still 63.)

So, my dilemma is to keep my fixed/rail handle setup and use the smaller ELCAN; or, sell the handle at a substantial loss and mount up around the US Optics, though I really don’t care for folding sights. Dunno.

But, to the original poster, look at the samplelist or the clearance section on Midway for those 1-4 Burris optics.

That’s more than a bit dicey, particularly given the qualifying latter half of the statement.

I have an AR332 that was given to me by Burris. It is surprisingly clear but the rifle I have it on clearly out preforms the optic. I am looking at switching to a precision scope like an XTR for this particular rifle. I also have a Bushnell Elete 3200 and I like the fixed power scopes but I was not impressed with it at all.
