I was looking at the TA-47 Compact ACOG, it’s 2x power, 20mm, but it’s very compact and light, plus has good eye relief. The thing is I don’t see people using them much, generally people opt for TA31 or TA11 type of full size ACOG. Is the Compact ACOG actually useful for .223 carbines?
The added eye relief is a big plus, as is reduced weight.
Look at the field of view figures, and you’ll see why these are always on the lower end of magnification.
If the BAC setup works well with your brain, these are a fantastic choice for short to intermediate range shooting. If it doesn’t, it’ll be a pricy optic with limited field of view (albeit a very durable, very bright one).
The only reason i don’t have these is that for snap shooting, the larger TA31 works fine, but when I’m focused through the optic, I want to maximize field of view and exit pupil - things that require a larger optic. When you’re using it for target discrimination, or longer range shooting, it’ll feel a bit handicapped.
If weight/size isn’t the driving factor, I’d look at the TR-24G. Huge flexibility, good glass, and covers the spectrum better. Hopefully a BDC reticle is in the works down the road.
I have the TA47R-2 and LOVE IT…they are hard to find though…

I use them on heavy battle rifles like a FAL.
I used a FAL w/ EOTech + Aimpoint 3X w/ Surefire & IR deployed for D0D OCONUS in GOA.
The weight was a lug for a 16 hour hump w/ all the KIT on.
I use a Compact ACOG on my FALs and it has proved itself & then some. The weight I saved was just under two lbs.
I prefer TA39R-4, TA39R-6 & TA33G-H
The weight they save helps compensate etc.
They are an excellent optic and made a huge difference in the weight of a FAL.

Actually, your question should be: Are the TA-31 and the like as good as a Compact Acog? The compacts are better for the 0-50 yard fight that most civilian and cop fights occur at than the TA-31 and TA-11 type Acogs. Where will your fight occur and at what distance?
I have shot my TA-33R8 from 10 to 600 yds with great effect. I Love this “do it all” optic

TA33 is the best acog they make with any significant amount of magnification. Lightweight, small, and easy to use with both eyes open. Easy to run as an OEG, also accepts a killflash.
op- i have 2 acogs,ta47 red chevron on larue mnt.,and ta-11 green donut laruemnt., the ta-11 stays on a recce build, but i keep changing between the 47 and a t-1 a/p.neither have ever let me down,the a/p is alittle faster close upbut the 47 is really pretty good all the way to 150-200 yrds for target ID. rugged little scope!!

The lower magnification Compacts are good, but it’s a lot of $$ for that low magnification.
The new TA33 Compact series is a popular choice for those guys looking for “an affordable ACOG” that is “small and light” but “still has good magnification”.

Anyone know if a TA33R-9’s BDC will work on a 16 inch barrel with M80 ball. Sr-25 EMC is the Rifle.
TA45-2 (1.5X24) compact here, on an A1 type carry handle. Best money I’ve ever spent. Fast, clear, and perfect for what a carbine is for IMHO.
I have a TA33-9 on an M1A which is a different breed of cat entirely. Don’t think I would care for it so much on an M4gery.
How did you mount the TA33 on the M1A?

Armakraut–I used the Smith Ent. ACOG-grooved mount. There is a picture of it on their web page with my comments. I still like it, but loaded out it’s on the hefty side. (I’m not a kid anymore.)
