I’m interested in getting a commanding officer-type 1911. I love the current Colt Wiley Clapp version, but I don’t want an alloy frame. Are there any decent base guns out there that fit the bill, other than spending $3000 on a Wilson Combat? Any good smiths that will cut a commander magwell down to officer’s length?

Dan Wesson makes a few CCO guns. If I remember correctly they are steel framed, but most will be alloy since they are marketed as carry guns.
I do know Les Bart’s Stinger is an all steel CCO but you are looking at a little over 2k.

For future reference, a Commanding Officer is a commander frame and an officer slide. A CCO, or Concealed Carry Officer is the other way around

Nope, once the anodizing is worn through then it’s just downhill from there. I’m getting out of SIG’s and specifically transitioning to steel framed 1911’s because of this.
springfield makes a pro version. and the range officer version too.
Had a Dan Wesson Specialist Commander for a while. It was a great gun. If i didn’t have a new for more 1911’s I’d probably have kept it.
I bought two Colt Gunsite CCOs 10 years ago. One is always carried and the other kept dirty for practice and is a backup.
They are my absolute favorite pistols. Shoot beautifully, totally reliable and what a 1911 should be.
Negatives are the weight is about 2 oz more than a Glock 19. You also really need a spare magazine.
Practice is the real issue. With the 19s I can do a lot of drills. With the ltwt CCO, 50 rounds and my hands hurt. So I can get a lot more practice time in with the Glocks.
Would i suggest a 19 over a ltwt CCO in 45. Definitely. Would I change to a Glock…not often.
