Comfortable Cargo Pants

I want to get a pair of cargo pants. Never had a pair before. I don’t live anywhere I can look at any that I like, so I’m doing research online. I searched, and found one 4 year old thread with about 4 posts in it, so I’m starting a new one. I’d like something a little looser fitting in the crotch area than regular Levi jeans. Below are the ones I have bookmarked.

BlackHawk Lightweight Tactical Pants Synthetic These look nice, but no photos or descriptions of what the back pockets look like. They do mention that there is a zippered back pocket for a wallet, but it does not say which side the pocket is on, or if it is on both sides. Anyone familiar with these pants know?

Atlanta Army Navy Tactical Response pants. These look ok, but I can’t get info on size. They just say small, medium, large, and so on. No idea what that means. Anyone know?

Cabela’s Legendary 7-Pocket Hiker Pants. Not sure I like the front cargo pockets. They look awful small.

Cabela’s Unlined Trailhiker II Pants. Any experience with these?

I’ve looked at .511 pants, but just don’t like the pocket layout. Any other good brands out there worth looking at? From the ones I’ve listed, it looks like I can keep the price under $50. I’m not paying more for something I can’t try on before buying.

Vertx pants.

Yes. I love the pair that I just got and really want to get one or two more. Awesome pants and not overly tactical but still lots of features.

Another vote Vertx.

Crye Precision Field AC pants. Sand and Ranger green are good colors. Great fit and extremely durable. http://cryeprecision.com/Item_Detail.aspx?ItemCode=APRFP40232R&title=Field-Pants-Ac

oops I didnt see the $50 cutoff…

Hit up a surplus store and try acu pants. I think they’re comfortable and useful, except as camo.

Eta: I’ve never actually worn acu pants. I’ve worn issued non-Crye multicam pants for months and I’ve been told they’re “acu cut” so I’m assuming acu pants are just as comfortable.

Another one for Vertx. I have a bunch of 5.11 pants and a couple of LA Police Gear pants and Vertx is the most comfortable and it is well made.

I want to try the Crye Precision AC pants, but those are pricey. I really like the ability to add the knee pads into the pants. I have Arteryx kneecaps and they are good, but the straps can rub.

I love my Vertx. I’ve been very happy with them. You’ve got to wash then a few times so they don’t attract everything. Very comfortable!

Yup, the only way to go.

I do however dislike their lightweight version. They have no stretch and breath worse than the standard.

I like the Arc’teryx Rampart pants. REI usually has them in-stock.

To the previous posters that use the Vertex pants.

How are the sizing on these? Do they run small at all?

Reason I ask, I just bought a pair of Propper pants and I wear a 34-36 waist. They were labled a 36 and fit like a pair of 32’s.

Thanks in advance.

Vertx pants are the win.

Make sure you find a place near you to try them on as the sizing is VERY weird sometimes, they are on their 2nd Gen pants now (I believe, might be 3rd gen) and you have to make sure you are buying the right pants for the right season.

I have 2x Phantom pants (green and khaki) and a Phantom LT pant (khaki) that I bought from their black friday sale (woot 40% off) and the LT pant is way too light to be worn in anything under 60 degrees outside.

Also if you want a pant to wear around that is not too “tacticool” but just right, check out Kuhl (http://www.rei.com/brand/Kuhl), very durable pants (plus if you buy from REI they will honor a good return policy if you mess them up doing tacticool stuff).

edit; Vertx now sells Kryptek pants - http://www.wearvertx.com/VertxMensKryptekPant.aspx - I might pick up a pair if they have another sale, but they are pretty cool.

I say Vertex. They feel great, are light weight, don’t look over the top, and stand up to wear well.

I’m 6’ and about 195lbs right now. I usually wear 32-34 waist. The Vertx pants are best for me at 34" waist and 32" long.

ETA - I just ordered another pair.

Just getchu some banana republics or some such.

In my opinion the most comfortable pants as well as the most durable ones are made by Arborwear.

I know they are not tacticool and are made for tree monkeys, but the tree monkeys got it right.

I didn’t have a good experience trying to find Vertx that fit me. I’m about 32" waist but have “squatters” lower body, so I couldn’t find any that fit BOTH waist and legs. Then again, this was a year or two ago and their sizing may have changed.

Is anybody aware of a major outlet that handles the Vertex pants? I have a Scheels, Gander Mountain, and Bass Pro somewhat near me.

The vertx look like more than I want to spend. Anyone ever use the side pocket of cargo pants to carry a single stack in a pocket holster?

They have a wide range of waist/inseam combinations. I always have a hard time finding pants that fit my quads that aren’t too loose in the waist. Were they too tight in the quads or what? Mine have fit great.
