Colt SP6940???

Alright since it seems like newbies are frowned upon here, I guess i would like to just ask a simple question as I embark on my first AR purchase. What do ppl on here think about the Colt SP6940?? Would like to know anything and everything about this rifle since this would be my first AR. Thanks anyone who could take the moment to help a newbie out!

I have no idea why you think New Members are “frowned upon.” Everyone was the FNG at some point.

The 6940 is the most accurate (chrome lined) AR that Colt makes. Good option for varmint hunting as well as a reliable training/HD weapon.

I don’t think new members are frowned upon - only when they do not use the search fucntion, are argumentative over stupid shit, or just join to push their crappy product. Everyone was new at some point.

As to the question, it depends on what the differences are between the LE6940 and the SP6940. If there are none, I would say it is a great way to go if that is the setup you are looking for.

The LE6940 (which is no longer made) and the SP6940 are the exact same gun in all ways (materials used, build quality, etc).

Cool - thanks. I’ve been wondering about that for awhile.

I have the ‘ban state’ compliant model of the 6940(MT6400R). I took it out this weekend for the first time, and I’m amazed how accurate this it is.
I put 10 rounds of IMI M193 into a quarter sized group at 100 yards. Rifle was equipped with a TA01NSN ACOG.
I’m VERY pleased.

I have had my 6940 for a bit now. Very accurate. Mine is markrd M 4 and I love it. You can’t go wrong with a Colt. Only prob is you will want more Colt’s and then you really start collecting. It’s a disease.:fie:

Stupid people are frowned upon here… not newbies. :stuck_out_tongue:

I also own a LE6940, the #1 advantage of it is its accuracy. With that in mind there are some negatives. You can’t remove the rail system and replace it with a different rail system later if you want to. You’re stuck with the monolithic rail system for life. Not so much a negative I guess as just a difference over the 6920. The upper is rock solid with no play anywhere. I have felt some aftermarket rail systems that had play in it, which I hate.

It has a folding front sight instead of a fixed A2 sight. The folding front sight is very durable, more so than any after market folding front sight you would attach to a rail system. However, it is still folding and could be knocked down if you were using irons. A lot of people are hard core fixed irons only for HD/SD guns. I think folding is OK, if you have a reliable RDS system, and you train flipping up your sights fast in the event of RDS failure.

The gun is slightly heavier than a 6920 due to the monolithic upper. It is more front heavy the other carbines I have handled, so you’d want to keep front mounted accessories to a minimum.

Comes with the Matech rear sight which isn’t the best, but serviceable. Consider switching those out for Troy or KAC rears.

The gun has been extremely reliable for me. I have only had one failure to feed with this gun during a 4 day class. On day 4, after never cleaning the gun, I had one failure to feed with one particular PMAG. I changed mags and the problem went away. After cleaning everything, that same PMAG functioned normally.

Before you buy, compare it with the 6920 and decide. The 6940 is about the same price as the 6920 with a decent rail system… but there are some pretty big difference between the two, so make sure you get the one that fits your needs. Also do some searches on 6940, 6920, and 6720 on these forums.

What do you plan to use the gun for??

Is there something other than the free floating barrel that makes the 6940 more accurate than other Colts?

Apparently not. They’re supposed to be the same barrel.

I’ve shot the 6940, and it’s accuracy is impressive.

Colt seem like a very reliable rifle… Want to stick to the 5.56 or .223 round, maybe do alittle coyote hunting with it, but mostly range shooting. Looking to get something that will be my one time, all purpose rifle.

New guy, awesome.

The 6940 is a great option and is top notch in many ways.

If you want to learn what more people have said about it or anything else you can think of try using the search function. What is great about this forum is the fact you can do that and learn a lot!

See you around.
