Colt Python

Well, here’s whats going on. I was just given a Colt Python. Its a 2 1/2" barrel, “Royal Blue” finish, original grips (strong checkering), and from the serial number, it looks as though it was manufactured in 1970. No holster wear, and it looks like it hasn’t been shot. Its a beauty. Do any of you know what fair market value is on it?

Im a SIG Sauer fanboy through and through, so I really do not know too much about this particular revolver. Prices seem to be all over the map. Thanks in advance.

Sold mine just like that with the original box at the last gun show for 600 bucks

Thanks for the reply.

$600 sounds pretty lowball to me. Not doubting Stubby’s post but I think you could get substantially more out of that gun if you decided to part with it.

It’s worth exactly what someone will pay for it.
I would expect a $700 sale without much trouble.

Typos brought to you via Tapatalk and autocorrect.

If it was the longer barrel such as 4 or 6" you could draw 1100+ but as stated 700 normal to low end 850 possibly

Thank you for the responses. It holds nicely, but it would just sit in the safe. I already have a ruger new vaquero that sits in the safe as it is. Im running out of space.

Check out some of the prices on GunBroker. You’ll shit your pants.

I did–checked out the prices and followed up by a subsequent shit. I dont know if those are pipe dreams, or are they actually selling for that price? From the looks of this thread, it seems like the former.

Don’t sell that thing, it’s gorgeous.

If you go shoot it you won’t want to sell it. The python is probably the best revolver ever made.

I wouldn’t want to part with it but I’m a sucker for wheel guns, especially Colts…

That one just sold for $4200. It was NIB. $600 is more that a bit low…

The Fugate brothers bought a bunch of my S&W’s a few years back.
Nice guys, but they have a tendency to,as they say,be higher than hell on their merchandise.

Don’t get me wrong, they have top notch stuff, but some of the prices are WAY HIGH !

At the last Ohio Gun Collectors show/meeting I attended,a Python like the OP’s sold for 2250.

A friend of mine bought it to finish out his collection of Pythons.
Said it was a"fair price ".

Colt Pythons are some of the most highly regarded revolvers and normally fetch a premium. A snubby in Royal Blue finish (the python bluing was some of the best I’ve ever seen) & NIB condition should fetch a handsome amount. Put it on GunBroker or take it to an auction, I would be surprised if it didn’t go for well over $1000. Selling it any other way is leaving mucho bucks on the table.

I had '66 & '68 2.5" royal blue Pythons. Sold the '68 on GB almost two years ago for $1,995.00 so I am sure you could get close to $2,000 now for yours. Kept the '66, put stag grips on it and sometimes CCW it when I feel like going old school.

Well looks like I got screwed out of some money… Awkward

LOL I know the feeling. Sold a Benelli M3 when I was new to firearms for about 40% less than I could have gotten for it. Live and learn.:cray:

On Pythons and other rare, desireable firearms - you don’t pay too much, you just buy too soon.

Someone, somewhere will pay you a lot of money for that thing.

2.5" Pythons are the rare ones. Plus, Colt hasn’t made any for quite some time and there is no expectation that production will resume any time soon.

I’d ask for an amount north of $1500 and expect to get that no problem.

I have 4,6,8 inch Pythons. $1400-$1600 is fair.
