I purchased what was supposed to be a new colt LE901-16S (2013 with conv. kit) from a dealer in another state for $1,900, then had it shipped to my FFL & picked it up.
When I opened the rifle the first thing I notice was the factory accessories package & magpul magazine that was factory sealed was opened & there was no QD swivels in the accessories package.
I then looked over the rifle and noticed the rifle was scratched up pretty good (not a problem) and the rifle did not have a IMOD stock.
Red flags going up I decided to open it up & take a look.
It appears to be new & only test fired but it appears to have some dermal work done to the feed ramps of the barrel extension at the locking lugs. All the dremeled areas are in the steel barrel extension not in the aluminum receiver.
Question for colt LE901 / SP901:
Does your barrel extension have dremel work done from the factory?
Hey, that’s not a secret, it’s called verifying functionality. Every customer’s AK I build is test fired. Some require a little more attention…it usually happens to be the Krinks.
I do like how the assumption automatically went to Colt being the culprit. Given the butt-stock change, (i’ll assume it was swapped out with a different butt-stock) i’d be more willing to bet on some Butt monkey fiddling with it at the Origin store, and then decided that one would be the unit they unload on some Internet purchaser.
This is true, perk of being LGS (never work at one, I was the guy that grabbed ammo). And testing fire function testing a new built AK is one thing, banging some rounds out of the latest and greatest toy that was just checked at factory, is kinda two differ things.
I have a take off Colt 5.56 barrel that I picked up off of Gunbroker. If I remember correctly, it has a 2012 date code and it has nearly identical polishing on the feed ramps. Obviously it isn’t a factory sterile example, but I can’t see why a guy who seems to buy Colt rifles, take them apart and sell them for parts would bother trying to polish anything.
Either that or they decide they needed to “test” it for safety and liability reasons before letting it go. Wasn’t done to me but I was there when a friend brought one back in to ask about the opened components. At least they admitted it but the excuse was beyond pathetic because if anything they have increased their liability should something happen for having tampered with it in the first place.
As I am more of a collector, I’d definitely have a problem with the opened package and scratched up rifle. Would you mind posting the name of this outfit so that I know who to avoid?
So am I & I would of been more upset but this gun is my only 308 ar and I planned it to be a shooter but if it was one of my collector grade rifles I would of been pissed. The moral of the story is buy from a reputable dealer like G&R tactical.
The seller that sold me this used colt LE901-16S as a new one was Four Peaks Armory.
I am happy to find out this colt LE901-16S that I purchaced has a lifetime warranty with colt!
Waiting for my free colt carhart jacket!
Now all I need is to find out where to sell this dumb ass conversion kit that came with it!
I recently bought a 901 as well, barrel date 1/14, serial 749.
Mine was bought from an internet dealer, then sent to Adco Firearms to be made compliant for my state.
I do have some slight polish marks on my feed ramps. Looks like a little bit of polish paste to me. It cleaned off easily.
I have an unfired 2013 colt le6920 still in the box, just opened it up and checked and it has the same polish marks. Seems to be a normal colt factory thing and not a problem. The opened accessory bag and scratches and incorrect stock would bother me though.
Ran mine today with brass cased Samson / IMI 7.62 NATO & it ran great!
Extraction was good & locked the bolt back every time using magpul gen 2 & 3 mags. No problems at all.
Will test it with steal cased ammo next week.
Aw c’mon that’s not a range report! Distance, Average group, smallest group, largest group, and sight method.
But seriously, for everything that appeared to be wrong, happy it turned out well for you.
Ran 40 rounds of PMC 147gr ball through mine for its first range trip.
Used a 5.56mm ACOG in the short term, while I decide what optic I want for this rifle.
No problems feeding, firing, or extracting. It ran as smooth as glass. I was a bit surprised that felt recoil wasn’t too different that a 5.56mm carbine.
Once I got the optic dialed in, I shot 2-5 shot groups at 100 yards right at 1".
Very impressed with this rifle.
