Pros and cons on this particular rifle. I had my heart set on a 6920 until I felt how light the 6720 is. Does the ‘pencil barrel’ have a good durability rep etc ? Just looking for some general feedback on a recreational rifle that will double as a home defense weapon. Thanks guys !!

No cons when compared to the LE6920. Barrel is plenty durable for your purposes.
It’s a great rifle. They are on sale pretty frequently and if you can find one for $800 or so, I think it’s the best gun you’ll find by a long shot. At just over 6 pounds empty, it’s a joy to carry and shoot. It is the quickest on target, most balanced and best handling full size AR I’ve tried. It will eat any ammo I feed it and is very accurate when I use quality ammo and do my part.

I was considering picking up a 6720 as well. The thing is so light and handy and feels great in the hands compared to my 6920 and 6940.
At around 800 bucks…it is a real steal. Might make a great “under the rear seat” pickup truck rifle as well.
Just saw Grant has them for $799. I might need to pick up another one.

If they are as reliable as a 6920 or my 6940…they ought to be fantastic.
I’ve owned a 6720 for a few years. I’ve owned 6920’s for even longer.
The ONLY difference of note between the two is the barrel. For recreational shooting and home protection/self defense, the 6720’s light weight barrel can do what you need it to do, as well as a 6920.
I added a Aimpoint PRO to accommodate my age appropriate eyes, and Magpul MOE sl furniture to mine. I use it when on vacation as my travel gun.
If Colt would make a 6720 with a factory low profile gas block, it would be perfect!
The Colt 6720 is one of the few guns that constantly draws my attention. Slap on an Aimpoint, X300, sling and you have a super light, no-nonsense poodle slayer.
$799 is an insanely great deal. Buy now or cry when Hillary is driving the price up during the election next year (I guess they will be $1650 on gun broker by Oct 2015)

Four years ago I decided to get a back-up for my 6920. The 6720 came highly recommended by many knowledgeable members here. Only problem was trying to find one in stock. They were going for around $1200 back then. Did the next best thing and got the BCM Lightweight Carbine Upper with the BCM BCG and Mod 4 CH. No deals like they have today! Also went with the complete BCM Lower with DD fixed rear sight, Magpul MOE stock and hand guard. The whole package set me back $1100. Today, to be able to get a 6720 ready to go right out of the box at $800, is truly an exceptional bargain. I’ll be definitely recommending this to people wanting to get in on the AR platform or to fulfill their other needs for a basic, lightweight carbine.

Love my 6720. Aimpoint T1, Geissle trigger, BCM Keymod rail, Surefire X300Ultra, & B5 Systems Bravo stock. Makes for a very lightweight system.
I love mine. Slapped on a 14" SLR rail and an Aimpoint pro and couldn’t be more pleased. No issues
In my opinion the AR6720 is a very under valued rifle. Lightweight, Colt quality, in a rifle with a price tag that is hard to beat. As Mr. Bell stated, just add a few accessories and you are GTG.
I think the decision is made. I will be getting one in the next couple weeks. I have a small windfall that will make this happen. I have wanted a Colt AR for a LONG time. I’ll echo the general consensus in that it’s a nice, light, reliable carbine. I have mine in Magpul furniture and have no complaints whatsoever. The comment you won’t ever hear about the 6720: “Man, I sure wish I could carry a heavier rifle.” Enjoy your 6720!
Got one about two years ago. Put a TA-33 red horseshoe ACOG on, a Geissele trigger, smaller round hand guard on, and done. Love it.
Supposedly Ed Heinemann (sp), the designer of the A-4 Skyhawk, said he “simplified and added lightness” to the design. Same idea.
I’d have to agree with most everyone here----the 6720’s a great all around rifle. Probably my favorite factory Colt offering (currently).
