Hey guys. Thinking about getting a Colt 6960 as my first AR. One thing I noticed though, is the receiver and the floating rail doesn’t seem to be on equal heights. It looks like its off maybe half a mm. Is this normal? I didn’t noticed this on the Daniel Defense. Would this affect the rifle at all? I attached some photos I found that shows this.
Yeah pretty normal…I had to look hard to even see the problem. I dont think ive ever had an AR that’s perfectly aligned. Never had one that didnt have at least a little wobble either.
100% normal. It’s a design flaw in the Centurion Rail. It DOES NOT affect function at all, but because it cinches/pinches down when tightened, it pulls the rail slightly lower than the Colt upper.
Great rifle though, had one pass through my hands and it was pretty accurate with cheap 55gr.
I bought a Trooper when they were going for under $800, and I’m very happy with it.
I pay close attention to details, and if my rail height doesn’t match the upper height, I’ve never noticed it.
If they were the same price, I’d choose the 6960 for the mid-gas system and additional handguard attachment screw…but I sure wouldn’t pay too much extra for the 6960.
I agree that a slight mis-match in height will make no performance difference at all.
With the prices the way they are currently the CCU at around 1K is the way to go. You can find them at certain sites right around that price. The trooper is almost the same price these days, so why not go with the midlength system
No problems with mine… If you want to start getting hung up on things, you can start looking at rails which have giant rings between the rail and receiver to act as a fastener, or look on the top rail closely to see how the 45s aren’t perfect, or top rail to top receiver rail aren’t perfect. The more obsessive you get, the worse everything starts to look. To be honest, if the looks are super important (or more so than functionality), you may want to skip Colt altogether.
Below is my Colt with CA rail. Any issues in shooting fall on me, and not the equipment.
I went to my local shop today to take a look at this. It was brand new in the box, but the upper receiver had a bunch of scratches on it. Is this normal quality for Colt?
Some dealers move all weapons from the display cases/racks to safes each night, and return them to the cases/racks each morning. One local dealer seems far from careful during this process, as pretty much every firearm is more scratched than any of mine (that I’ve been using for many years). These weapons are mostly only for display, and if I bought one, it would come from their back room inventory, not the rack.
Colts are known to have a few blemishes, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from getting one. If you’re getting it from a local dealer, then you may be able to pick one from their inventory that suits you best.
If I had to go from zero to AR today, I’d get the Colt CCU, Aimpoint T2, Scalar Works mount, a few Magpul mags and a pile of ammo deep enough to Scrooge McDuck in.
