I only have one weapon in FDE a Mossberg 590 Shockwave which I would have preferred in with the All-Weather Silver Cerakote finish, but that version cost like $100 extra just because it came in a buoyant waterproof tube. That’s what I think too, but it nevertheless seems weird, especially since Colt Canada can’t even sell their rifles on the USA market and therefore are presumably marketing this to military/law enforcement.
Of course, fans of FDE insist that it’s the most well-rounded all-terrain base coat for a firearm just because they like it. Personally, I’m a fan of Swiss TAZ-83 “Alpenflage” Camo, but I won’t attempt to make the argument that it’s functional, all-terrain camo.

The gun not being the right shade for instagram photos aside, what are the opinions on the gun? I think the m5 lower is a failure, and the aero mount is bad, but i quite like the upper

Why? I have a couple of M5’s and an M7. Even though I’m not a lefty, I think the right-side bolt release is great. It’s definitely an improvement over the standard lower.

It hardly takes a highschool girl to recognize the tactical superiority of Muddy Girl Camo versus Flat Dark Earth.
I think it’s got some high points. Aero mount wouldn’t have been my first choice, but easily remedied.
As for color? Well, having personally rattle canned .mil M16s I can testify that the technology exists to address any concerns.
If there’s a significant cost savings, like big enough to come out ahead even after Gunkote/Duracoat/Cerakote costs, even Barbie Pink becomes an option. LOL And Krylon is always cheap…

Fde/sand is arguably the best base color. It exists in every environment except arctic. Add green in south/summer, replace green with white in winter/subarctic.
