Putting together a build with a Colt 14.5 SOCOM barrel and a MUR with centurion C4.
The accuracy and durability of the SOCOM barrel appeals to me a lot. I’ve been debating though if I should get a Colt BCG as well from G and R. The cost is 100% more than a BCG from AIM surplus. Will there really be a difference?
Short answer. Yes.
Other options that pop to mind include bcm.

Considering that the two highest stress parts in the rifle are are barrel and the bolt, I wouldn’t skimp on the BCG.
Would the AIM BCG work? Probably, but are you ok with probably?
Never skimp on the BCG.

There are plenty of options. The short list includes, Colt, BCM and I would strongly recommend looking at the SIONICS NP3.

Probably most everything. BCM has set one of the highest standards in the industry for the in house QC. If the company you are buying a BCG from is relying the company they are buying their BCG’s from to do THEIR QC, then you have a problem IMHO.

AH okay thanks. I’ve been tempted to just go for the BCM version of the M4 SOCOM Colt upper but it seems they’re using barrels from FN which in testing doesn’t seem to be quite as accurate as the Colt SOCOM 14.5 from testing results.
Two things I would never go cheap on, BCG and Fire control group.

As far as BCGs go, just compare them and make a decision. Many of them are made of the same metals and undergo the same processes for testing. Frankly, if I can get a comparable BCG a lot cheaper from AIM, I will buy it in a heartbeat. Additionally, a BCG does not warrant a higher price just because it is sold by Colt, BCM, LMT, or whom ever. Heck, even the PSA Premium BCGs are good ones at a bargain price. It all boils down to what you want to brag on having. I will say this, if money is no object and you are going with the Colt upper assembly, I would say to buy the Colt M16 BCG just so you can have an all-Colt upper assembly.
I would throw a cheap barrel on long before i used a junk BCG. i’ve seen junk AR’s run reliably once a decent BCG is installed but have never seen a barrel so shitty that it stopped the gun from functioning (though i’m sure IG or some of the other guys have).
Ok, not trying to stir up a pissing match but I was implying bbl before FCG (assuming FCG was just standard in spec) not bbl before BCG.
This. The cheapest AR barrels might be minute of man at a hundred, but if your weapon doesn’t fire at all then it doesn’t matter.

Thanks yeah, that’s what I was thinking but materially speaking, it’s hard for me to understand exactly what’s different about a Colt BCG and a well proven AIM or other manuf BCG? It seems some of the less expensive BCG’s are made from high quality materials and see the same HP/MP tests. It also seems I can’t seem to find a bad review of these BCGs which are in wide usage.
OP you are obviously using other quality parts, Colt barrel, Mur upper, Centurion rail. All of which are parts that most here will tell you are good to go. Considering you are not skimping in these areas why would you skimp on the BCG? That is the first question here that I think would bare answering. If you are looking to cut corners, or spend less there are other areas I would consider cutting cost. That or save your pennies for a little longer.
Explaining what the mission of this rifle is going to be may be something that would help guide those who have been there and done that guide you to the parts that would best serve at the best price.
Just bought one through you guys, though I wish you guys charged based on package price. Shipping for a single BCG is rather high.
I have an AIM surplus BCG NIB v2. After about 150 rounds supressed, the carbon is realllly caked onto the bcg (even the actual rails). Too bad I bought the bcg prior to the markm bolt discussion (or at least me seeing the post). Their nitride carriers may fair better. Though even the firing pin is stained, albeit doesn’t have a bunch of carbon buildup.
My young’s manufacturing carrier is still going strong though.
