…Ok, got a friend who may part with his upper and think it comes with two mags.
Do I want this?? I’m not sure why I got the itch but kinda has my interest perked.
Anything I need to know or consider with this round regarding reliability / parts / etc?? This would be my first 7.62x39 and don’t even have ammo to shoot in her.
The solution to this issue, at least MY solution to it, was to get one of the MGI “hydra” lowers. It takes AK mags. I use that lower for both my 5.45 and my 7.62x39 uppers.
A few items - yes - they sold a factory 20" “conversion” The rifle only came with a 16"(lower marked 7.62x39). CDNN had these new years ago, during the AGB for like $399 or something rediculous.
Big issues were mags and much less was firing pin penetration and extractor breaking. There was a USA brand(normally hideous) franken mag which looked like a combo of a an AK mag and a 20rnd AR mag all made out of flimsy steel that worked fairly well. The C-Products mags seem to work well.
Firing pin issue was handled by either filing down a bit off the back of the bolt - never had to myself. Also never had extractors breaking - but that is the also one of the “dont use wolf ammo” tales of long ago.
As for the MGI hydra, it wont work unless you mill out some of the inside of the upper and lower ramps of the bcg. Micheals Machines used to make an “AR-47” that excepted AK mags and for a fee he would mill-out you upper and bcg. Used to be directions on the web somewhere for those brave dremmel warriors.
Benefits of the MGI hydra are realized with their quick change barrel upper and their 7.62x39, 5.45, 5.56, 9mm, etc mag well changes.
Been shooting this “conversion” 16" for 15 years… love it and get by with the Factory 5 round magazines. Total capacity 6 rounds if you single load the first and jam the magazine in. Accuracy is very good and power is right. I would love a ten round 100% reliable magazine, or 20 round…
