I caught the 9mm bug for my next build. Actually I would only need the barrel shortened and to add a rail. I know I can’t just buy the carbine and mod to a pistol, but new lowers and uppers are being sold separately. So can I legally buy the complete lower, and swap out the extension tube and stock for a pistol tube? Even though the receiver is marked “carbine” my understanding is it doesn’t become a rifle until attached to an upper while wearing a stock. I would then buy the upper and send out to have the barrel shortened to 7-9" - whatever best works with the chosen rail.
Does this sound kosher re NFA law? Also would I want to thread for .308 flash hider? I know there are other ways to go, but I’m only interested in a near factory Colt.
You can build any AR lower into a pistol as long as it has never been assembled as a rifle. I don’t know if the Colt is available as a stripped 9mm lower, but you want to make sure you can prove that you bought it “virgin”, i.e. that it is not a rifle take off.
I just ordered the CMMG dedicated 9mm lower on sale at Brownell’s for $169 with another 7.5% discount with “FRK” coupon code.
None the less… you’re still stuck with a blow back operation. Not appealing to me since I’d want a sub caliber to be a fast shooter, but to each his own.
MPX-P looks sweet. Not a front-heavy pig like my P556. I expect I will have one down the line. I thought I read the newer Colt revisions had addressed the main 9mm issues??
I know of no way to prove the new 6951 lowers on Gunbroker are not takeoffs. I was hoping as the first retail buyer it would not matter. Stripped 9mm Colt lowers and parts kits must be albino unicorns.
It does indeed. Doesn’t serve much of a role… other than a short to mid range fun steel ringer. I hope they end up selling for a lot lower than the suggested retail price of 1800ish or whatever.
The CMMG 9mm lower works great for me, as does the CMMG BCG. It’s easy to build a pistol upper for it. I have near 10k rounds through my 6450 and wouldn’t modify it for love or money.
