Colt 6940 vs. SW MP15X

I have the opportunity to change my patrol rifle from a SW MP15X to a Colt 6940.

Assuming it’s an up and up trade what would you do and why?

Yes. I would do it.

Jump…before the opportunity disappears!

Jump on it now.

Do it post haste! The Colt is a superior firearm, thats why!

Fetep

who would make that trade? You sure the other guy doesn’t have like 15000 rounds through his rifle already?

I’d do it in a heartbeat if the Colt is in good condition.

First off, why does he want to trade? There must be a reason, I am a big fan of M&P rifles, I say no trade due to the fact that there may be something he is not telling you. If the S&W is working for you then I wouldn’t risk it.

Do it…

Do it

I was just wondering what people thought. I would most likely have to pay an extra $300 for the Colt.

Colt hands down!

I’d make the trade unless

A. the guy is shady/gun is beat
B. he wants a large sum of money to go with the Smith

  1. Have you had any issues with your M&P?

  2. Do you know the condition of the Colt? Rounds fired through it? Functioning issues present?

  3. Do you want a monolithic upper?

If your M&P has a good track record, I would be a bit cautious of abandoning a known quantity for an unknown, even if it is a Colt. I would want to get the 6940 to the range and put rounds through it before making the jump.

If your M&P is solid, I would take that $300 and invest it elsewhere such as in ammo, magazines, training, etc.

You are also almost a third of the way to a Colt 6920/6720/6721. Then you can have your M&P as a backup.

Yeah really depends on the round count, if its reasonable get the Pony. If it was me and the round count was excessive, I’d skip on the Colt, live with the smith a bit longer till that $300 turns into a bit more and pull the trigger on a BCM mid length upper. Push the two pins and call it a day.

What is the round count and condition? What, if any accessories are on each rifle? I’ve had some experience with several S&W’s and in my opinion they are between the regular often mentioned top carbines and the hobby guns. As a patrol rifle it will probably not get shot too much, either way, unfortunately. I don’t care for the monolithic heavier carbine regardless of manufacturer.

Or, you could take that $300 and invest in a BCM lower now, and get the upper of your choice down the road.

Unfortunately, G&R Tactical’s blemished BCM lowers are now out of stock.

I noticed this thread is cross posted over on TOS. Colt would be an upgrade however if the Smith hasn’t given you any problems and you are not going to be out any $$$, I would keep it and save up for a Colt. Then use the Smith as the backup.

You could save another $700 and buy an additional 6920 and keep your S&W as a backup?

I had deja vu because I saw this thread at THR and replied there. If it was me, I’d make the swap. I like monolothics but some folks don’t like them since they tinker with rail systems for funsies. More details on the potential trade would be beneficial.
