Colt 6920 SOCOM stock weight

This 2013 configuration I recently purchased comes with the 4 position GI stock. I have considered changing it out with an LMT SOPMOD or the B5 enhanced (if you can find one). I considered the Magpul CTR but I think it may not weigh enough. I am looking for a FDE color since none of my other Colts and LMTs use this color scheme.

Since the front end on this carbine is heavier than the standard M4 set up, and I will be adding a laser/light combo and forward grip. I am thinking a heavier rear stock may be better for a balanced weapon. Any thoughts on this?

I’m not sure about stock weight. I can say that with my 6920 that I added a Daniel Defense RIS II FSP rail and B5 SopMod to, It balances out fairly close to the barrel nut.

I figure with you having the heavier barrel profile under the hand guard and no FSP rail (as you said SOCOM and not SOCOM II) it’s probably pretty close to the weight and balance of mine with both being bare (give or take a little).

In the end, I think where you place your light and laser will have the most effect on perceived balance, followed up by where you place your optic (if you run one) as that’s what I’ve noticed to be the case on mine.

I’ve got a Dbal-i2 and Surefire m952 on mine and it wasn’t bad at all with the standard carbine length rail (Because I wasn’t running them as far forward due to rail space). Now with the FSP rail installed and trying the light/laser in a more forward position, it has made me aware of how heavy the setup is. I’m now running the laser farther back (about midway on a carbine length hand guard instead of right behind the FSP) and switching to an M600 scout light to save weight off of the front of the gun. (Optic is a Aimpoint M2 with Larue mount ran on the most forward receiver position btw).

In the end it really depends on where you place everything I think.

Hope this helps.

I changed out the LMT SOPMOD for the B5 enhanced on my 6940 and it did move the balance point further toward the muzzle. When adding a VFG and an Inforce WML on a Thorntail mount, it’s even more nose heavy than it was.

I’ve used CAR stocks, waffle stocks and SOPMOD stocks on SOCOM profile barrels and it’s never even gonna be close to balanced.

That barrel is heavy, especially being 16", so get used to a really nose heavy gun.

Let me add that this 6920 SOCOM has the Knights Armament RAS. Normally Colt is installing the Rogers Super Stoc on their current civilian carbines. Since this 2013 (built March) SOCOM configuration comes with the 4 position GI stock, maybe Colt figured it’s for better balance than the lighter Rogers stock?

Um. No. It’s supposed to look like a replica of a USGI M4A1.

A heavy weight barrel is never gonna be offset by the very slight difference in weight between stocks.

A 10.5 or 12.5" lightweight barrel? Yeah, a stock can make a difference. A 16" SOCOM? Not so much.

The angled butt and no rubber pad on the M4 waffle stock makes a carbine handle much quicker for me than a SOPMOD.
