Colt 6920 accuracy?

I just recently purchased above rifle and it is my first venture into the world of ars. I am curious what kind of accuracy should I expect at 100yds? Ammo will be 55gr fmj bt. I’m use to shooting bolt guns out to 800. Will the colt be an moa rifle, 2 moa or?? I only ask so I know what to expect whether it’s the gun or me and I’m not driving it right. I tried the search but didn’t have any luck. Thanks in advance

Its probably the ammo choice. I don’t have a 6920 so I cant speak to that, but I have a Colt 6720 lightweight. When shooting standard 55 or 62g fmj I find the accuracy with my gun to be around a foot spread or more at 100 yards (probably more me than the rifle). However, when I use Hornady TAP 75gr hollowpoint, I find it shoots around 2 MOA, sometimes less on a good day.

Again, slightly different rifle, and entirely different conditions, but take it with a grain of salt.

Mine shoots about 1.5" at 100 with 62 grain 556 and about 2" with 55 grain 223 so far…my heavy 75 grain hand loads shoot about 1.5" also.my 6920 isn’t free floated btw

1 foot? that’s around 12 moa, it should be shooting better than that!

Like I said, probably is me! Need more $$$ for more ammo for more practice. A vicious cycle for a college student. Just one more semester, then I can afford more training lol!

Asking what an AR accuracy will be with factory 55 FMJ is to put it mildly a lesson in futility. There are so many different brands and lots of 55 FMJ and the variances of the barrels that any comparison would be moot. One brand/lot of ammo in barrel “A” would have a noticeable different result in barrel “B”. Just buy different brands and test fire to see which brand gives a more consistent result with “your” 6920.

Lake city 55 gr 556 NATO gives somewhere between 2-2.5" groups under ideal conditions for my old 6920.

Mine shot around 2 moa stock and around 1.5 moa after getting free floated. That’s with Federal 55 grn.

It’s not a sniper rifle or a bolt gun. It’s a minute of asshole gun. If you want more out of it, shoot better ammo and get a better trigger. Biggest thing is to get some practice and find out what it can do.

I guess I got lucky. My 6920 shoots sub MOA with Federal 62g, and it opens up a bit to about 1.5 inches at 100 yards with Federal 55g. This is bench rested with a Burris MTAC 1.5-6x40 scope.

Thanks for the responses. I know ammo quality makes a huge difference, but soundslike its a 2moa gun. That’s fine just wanted to have a basic reference point to start at.

I have a few. With good ammo they’ll all do about 2-3’‘. I have one with a rail that’ll get around 1.5’'. Good enough for 99% of AR applications.

I wouldn’t be busting out match ammo yet. Get yourself to where you can shoot 3-4" irons groups at 100 first… using ball ammo

The gun is likely capable of around MOA (1" at 100 with good 77 gr or 69 gr OTM bullets) It’s not uncommon for most of the regular Chrome lined barrels from BCM or COLT these days to get around MOA with ammo and a magnified optic.

My 6920 with larue rail and ML3 shoots 1-2 MOA with M855 and M193.

Free floated chrome lined barrels are capable of a lot more than what most people give them credit for. For instance, my 16" CL barrel shoots ~.75moa with my 77gr handloads using a nice trigger (SD-C) & magnified optic. And this isn’t an isolated incident. Many others have had the same or similar results.

I would learn to shoot as well as possible as it is right now. Then move onto free-floating, nice trigger, magnified optics, etc. when you have some proficiency with it.

My experience matches Onyx Z’s. Just by the nature of the kind of shooting we do… we run almost everything through some sort of accuracy test.

I can’t remember any barrel that we couldn’t at least get down to 1.5" at 100… and those are like the 10.5" barrels that we just test with a Red dot or something.

The 6920s I have had have always been more than accurate enough for their intended use, and performed at least as well as the competitors.

Onyx Z, CL - Chrome Lined or CL - Compass Lake?
