This is NOT the sort of thing i’d usually post about, but my doctors are useless, and i figured maybe some of you older farts might have a bit of experience with this. i’m currently sucking on GoLYTELY and fasting until sometime tomorrow afternoon. i do NOT fast well. when my blood sugar drops, i feel AWFUL, get MEAN, cant sleep, cant concentrate, terrible headache, etc… im sure this happens on some scale to everyone, but i seem even worse. i did, at least, figure out that lemon flavored Cystal Lite, while normally disgusting by itself, makes the GoLYTELY go down a lot easier. but that’s not helping my already quickly developing headache, and poor disposition.
this is my second colonoscopy, and i clearly remember being horrible miserable the last time. so as to the question- is there anything, in anyones experience, i can do to help make this flush go more comfortably? has anyone ever tried sucking on sugar cubes or anything? all my doctor has to say is, “it sucks, i don’t think there’s anything that makes it better.”
Ah… the magic sludge. I work in a hospital so I am one of the hell devils who administer the stuff. Other then dumping it down an n/g tube, you gotta take it like a man. I’ll pray for you and your poor family while they’re dealing with your misogynistic behavior as a result of your starvation.
When you find a good Doc bkb, let me know. I know quite a few assholes that need this procedure. I may even pay for a Billboard in front of my HOA, if he’s extra brutal.
Keeping the prep chilled until time to drink it has made mine go down a little easier. Whatever you do, drink it all. I’ve heard of people going halfway on the prep then having the colonoscopy cancelled halfway in. Kind of a “game called due to a muddy field” thing. Pun intended.
They gave me a choice of drinking a lot of liquid or swallowing a bunch of pills and I opted for the latter. I got pretty hungry, but drank some warm chicken broth the night before and it helped. I took all the pills at the prescribed intervals because I didn’t want to repeat the test anytime soon.
Not that this makes you feel any better, but I tried one of those “celebrity cleanse/fast’s” one time. This one is the lemon juice and maple syrup fast. It has you drink a 16 oz glass of warm water mixed with 2 tablespoons of salt in the morning. They warn you to give yourself at least 2 hours prior to needing to leave the house. 2 hours was the minimum I needed. It was terrible.
I lasted 3 days and gave up cause I thought I was going to die.
bkb- I know and feel your pain. I had my second one in 2 years just last week. For me the flush wasn’t as bad with the GoLytele as it is with just the pills and that other crap they give you.
You sound like you are doing all the right things, it just sucks real bad getting thru the prep.
One thing bkb, good idea to bring extra skivvies, pants, baby wipes, and a trash bag for the stuff you are wearing on the way there. I case of the famous last words in the car “oh, no problem, I just have to cut this little fart”, just as you hit the big pothole in the road!
Somehow it seems “colonoscopy” and “take it like a man” should NEVER be in the same sentence! lol
*sorry bro i’m trying to help cheer you up"
I know how the blood sugar thing is i’m diabetic and fight that shit daily but i’ve never
had a colonoscopy (i just turned 40) but it sounds like a hassle.
(bet you thought i was gonna say “pain in the ass”)
I do hope everything turns out O.K. and they do find what they need to and
can help. or if just a “tune-up” they find nothing wrong and send you motorin
with a clean bill of health.
Goodluck and i do hope ummm everything comes out ok.
(in every way)
I used half gallon of lemonade with water with the crap the VA gave me to drink. The whole thing is a major pain in the butt. But to morrow will be here soon enough. Then you will be OK once you get to eat again.
I had one a few years ago and while not something I would recommend it was something to be endured. The fasting sucked bad. I don’t do well skipping meals so I relate to the cranky part.
GoLYTELY, my doctor even said it was misnamed … and chuckled. I tried chilling it which helped but not enough. At first it was just slightly distasteful but about halfway through the gallon I could barely keep it down. I didn’t have anything to mix with it so it was doubly bad. Don’t laugh, but I got the last part down by pouring a glass of Coke and sniffing it. I’d close my eyes; drink as much solution as fast as I could then immediately start smelling the glass of pop. I did not drink any of it but for some reason the smell made my stomach calm a bit and allowed me to keep it down.
You need three containers of the Crystal Light Lemonade to help with the taste. Cottonelle Fresh wipes may help, so that the T.P. doesn’t start feeling like sandpaper. I also took the drugs they offered for during the procedure too, it wasn’t that bad then (I had driver to take me home).
They found a couple of polyps way back in there that they wouldn’t have found if I hadn’t followed the directions to make sure I was cleaned out totally. So do it the right way, it may save your life.
I had a colonoscopy and my wife had two, it was not as bad and it was over before I knew it. The preparation was not the end of the world I started drinking the solution mixed with crystal light lemonade cold from the fridge at 2 O’Clock in the afternoon finished by 4 or 5 PM and finished going by 11 pm I went to bed and in the morning at 8 am it was over with and came home had a good breakfast. No problem.
The only thing that bothered me the doctor did not send flowers or call for that matter he said he does not want to see me for ten years, after getting that familiar with me, well what can you do thats life.;)
