I need to mount a scope, and whether I trust myself or someone else to do it, I could use some information. I’m really most, or first, interested in optimal alignment of the cross hairs, rather than dialing in a point of impact. The most attractive method, in principle, seems to be the mechanical bore sighters with an optical collimator that go in the muzzle - largely because this requires neither the gun nor a target to be level, if I understand correctly.
I would benefit from assurance that this process does not damage the crown or the bore. Also, I have been told that these boresighter/collimators can be difficult to use on an AR because the distance from scope center to bore is too great. I would hope that since my primary concern is cross hair alignment and not point of impact, I might be able to get by with a vertical cross hair alignment if that proved to be a problem.
Can anyone speak to these points, and/or recommend a system that will work for me?
