Cold and Flu Remedies

I delivered a truckload of stuff to the guys today and came back home.

Couldn’t sleep last night. Coughing, plurasy in my chest, sneezing, slept 2 hours at most.

My son at work said I should go to the doctor, as did my wife when I got home.
Screw that, the first thing they do when I go to the doc is give me a steroid shot.

I say Jim Beam. I ran out, but found that I had some Ten High in reserve.
Been hitting it for 8 hours now and I must say it’s working, I’m feeling better.

You people are boring me. I’m thinking of going to bed to watch the Cards beat the Giants.

Theres nothing a doc can do for a common cold. Flu is different, but for a cold all you can do is fight the symptoms. Today’s cold medicine is crap. For this type of stuff I bought some Mucinex D which has the good stuff…but thanks to the War on Drugs you have to buy it from the pharmacy and they “track” how much you buy. Anyways it had the good ole medicine in it for congestion.

If it gets really bad, and you HAVE to see a doc ask for cough syrup with codeine in it. This is only if you feel like you are hacking up a lung. My wife got it one time, and I got her same bug a week later. Whatever it was we were both dry hacking to where it honestly hurt, and that stuff was excellent. I HATE having to see a doctor over some BS but thats how things are now. The ‘War on Drugs’ makes EVERYONE look like a pill popper and junkie for trying to get actual medicine that works. All of the OTC stuff now is so dumbed down you’re wasting your money.

Cold “medicine” isn’t. All they do is cover up symptoms and make you think you are getting better so you go out and do shit when you really should be resting and thus prolong your illness.

Worse yet, many combine alcohol with acetaminophen, a combination that is known to cause liver damage. How products with the combo are still on shelves is beyond me.

Rest and drinking fluids is all a guy can do. Anything that makes you feel better is only covering up symptoms.

Intersting though, I have read some research supporting the idea that moderate exercise can help ramp up the body’s immune response, but the findings were weak. This may seem counter intuitive, there are mechanisms of the immune system that respond to exercise, including antibody secretion.

I have also read research that indicates that sex increases antibody secretion (IgA). Best tell the wife…

I don’t think this last Ten High is going down. I may have to leave it in the fridge when I go to bed here in a minute.

I put a towel over my head and breathe in a lot of steam and peppermint oil. I wished I had my own personal sauna. :frowning:

Clear fluids, hot tea, and a Jamba Juice Cold Buster usually does the trick for me.

To try and avoid colds (common cold type stuff) I take some various vitamins / supplements. I have no proof that it works. It is subjective.

However, I have been taking a daily mix of OPC type antioxidants (oligomeric proanthocyanadins) since late 2000. (Grape skin extract aka “red wine” extract made from the skins and flesh of purple grapes, grape seed extract, and pine bark extract aka “pycnogenol”). Since around 2003 or 2004 I have added another mix made up of extracts from various purple and red type vegetables and fruits. (Actual names of the two are “OPC-3” and “Maximum ORAC” in case anyone is interested.) I also take 1000-2500mg Vitamin C most days but was taking that before I started the stuff listed above. (I take other supplements and a multi vitamin but that does not factor in to this – they have been added to the above over the last 12 years, except the Vit C and multivitamin and a fish oil which I was already doing – the biggest change happened with the addition of the antioxidants in 2000)

Before 2000, I would regularly get 3-4+ colds a year and they would be pretty strong and last many days. This was a regular occurrence. Since 2000, after I started taking the above OPC antioxidant mix daily (in a liquid isotonic form), my incidence of colds has gone down to 0-2 a year, and they are usually over in 2-3 days, with the worst, drippy nose/can’t think straight part being mere hours instead of 2+ days. I have no objective proof that it is the above antioxidant mix I take, but the change happened right after I started taking it. My wife also started taking it and saw a similar improvement in her life WRT colds.

My kids were started on a kid-size portion of the above, plus a liquid isotonic kids multi-vitamin when they were 1 and they have also had a lot fewer colds than the kids in the neighborhood and than I ever had. They still get an occasional cold, but it is less severe than I would consider normal and less often.

Again, subjective and I have no proof they are related. However, I continue and will continue to take this.

Now, when I do feel a cold coming on, I jam some extra Vit C, and extra garlic tablet or two, and some extra antioxidants for as long as I feel the cold symptoms. I don’t know if it helps to increase the amounts when the cold actually comes on, but I do it anyway. Can’t hurt. This is all stuff you piss out if you overload anyway.

As was mentioned by Panzerr, I’ve heard similar that moderate exercise can help.

And of course, the obligatory stay hydrated and get as much sleep as you can.

I’ve had a sinus infection for over a damn month. I’m on my 4th different antibiotic now. For colds, I try to stay hydrated and rest plenty…

A long time ago when I was a child my grandmother would feed me soups and have me sleep. If only I could convince my wife of this strategy haha…

The large amounts of bourbon seems to have kicked my cold. It brought on other complications however, mainly a dull throbbing headache.

Also a warning from an admin on another site to use the ignore feature or GTFO, and for sale ads on 5 forums that I have to edit.

Alcohol seems to help a nagging sore throat sometimes. Actually some 'ol moonshine works great…

For the last couple of years I have become a believer in the combination below to very noticeably reduce the severity and druation of colds/flu for myself. I’ve taken these things separately and they didn’t seem to do much, but taken together they seem knock about 50-70% off the misery level for me. Each of these is a proven germ-inhibitor and/or immune system booster, so I don’t see how they could do anything but help.

3 times per day, with meals:

  • 45mg Oregano Oil (capsule)
  • 500mg Olive Leaf Extract (capsule)
  • 1000mg Ester C (capsule)
  • 1000mg Vitamin D (gel cap - liquid)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of organic coconut oil

Also, (as I type this I’m on day 3 of what has turned out to be a VERY mild cold) I’m trying a colloidal silver nasal spray (Soveriegn Silver) 2 sprays in each nostril 5 times per day. Seems to have helped the sinus symptoms, but I’m not 100% convinced yet.

In te past, the normal cycle of a “cold” type illness for me was 1 day of “aw man, I think I’m getting sick”. Then 1-2 days of being almost 100% useless with fever, pretty severe sinus congestion and/or drainage. Then 3-5 days of no fever, but coughing up, blowing out, cleaning out the crud. So a total of at least 5-7 days of not being able to function at more than about 50%.

Since starting the combo above, the 1-2 days of “down” time has usually been reduced to one long night’s sleep. The sinus symptoms are about half what they used to be. The coughing up cleaning out phase is almost nonexistent - maybe a day or two vs 5-7 in the past.

Hope that helps.

My grandfathers remedy was to boil congac if not then wine (both made from grape) drink a cup and go to bed under thick covers. I tried it, tastes like shit but it seems to work. I think you just sweat some of the illness out but what the hell do i know im not a doc and im all for anything with alcohol!!!
