Excellent article on Col. Robert Howard one of our most decorated, but not widely known, soldiers. The man was nominated for three separate Medals of Honor - he would be decorated with two DSC’s and the MoH.
There needs to be a movie made about this man.
Simply badass, when he retired from the US Army after 36 years of service as a full colonel, he was the most highly decorated service member on active duty.

In the 80s had a friend whose father was an officer at the JFK center at fort Bragg, he was either lieutenant colonel or colonel, last name was Barcena. I would go down every now and then for a weekend to visit, and one day my buddy Luis, his mom, and I were in the building and I met him. That was 1984ish. Heckuva nice guy, acted like he had all the time in the world to visit with us. Legend and hero.

In Plaster’s book about SOG, Howard once ran alongside an NVA truck full of soldiers on The Trail in Laos and, still holding the clacker, tossed a claymore into the bed of the truck and detonated it. That’s balls of steel right there!
