Co-witness laser and optic?

I picked up a Crimson trace vertical grip with an integrated laser at a yard sale. I am interested in trying it on a rifle that already has a scope on it.

Should the laser be independently zero’d, or should it be zero’d to co-witness with the scope crosshairs?

Due to the different trajectory of bore/laser vs bore/scope, I’d start cowitnessed with the scope to get on paper and adjust zero at your chosen distance.
