Early this summer I ordered a CMP M1 Carbine. About a month ago I got one, a rack grade Underwood. It maybe rack grade but it looks good to me. I barely cleaned it and took it out. Numerous FTE and feed. Back home I broke it down, cleaned every nook and cranny, and installed a Wolff spring kit. Today I ran it again and wow, what a difference new springs and a cleaning make! I figure out of 5 mags I have one bad one, the rest run great. Fun gun to shoot, looks like I’ll have to start reloading .30 carbine.
M1 Carbine’s are crazy fun to shoot, I’d shoot my Inland more often if ammo wasn’t so expensive and sometimes hard to find. You might want to try some of those new Korean mags that AIM has been selling, I’ve only tried the 30 rounders but they’ve been great and I read good things about the 15 rounders too. At 4.5 lbs, minimal recoil and handy as all get out I think they’re totally underrated for plinking and self-defense under 100m with good soft-points.
Where’s your pics?!?
Congrats, they’re great guns and I think underrated as well. CMP is a wealth of information on the Garand and Carbine. If you’re going to reload this is the info I use and have had pretty good success with it. Usually with in a few fps +/- what is listed.

I have also used the 15 round Korean magazines and have not had any problems with them, I think they’re excellent.
Love mine s well, it was a Xmas gift from my brother.
Yep, the 15 round mags are great.
They are a lot of fun. Granted they probably can’t do anything an AR carbine can’t do better but there’s something about holding history in your hands. I bought one a few years ago from the CMP, a 1944 Inland. Really clean and accurate as well. I made the excuse my daughters might want one. ![]()
Thanks guys. Sorry no pics, but you all have seen a M1 before. Thanks X11, good info there, I saved it. I think I’ll use it for IDPA multi gun comp. My son will be excited when he gets home as it will add to his future collection.

In my limited experience with them they are do not offer the level of reliability with softpoints that we have come to expect with modern guns. I imagine smoothing the feedramp and chamber can change that.
Also you have to check them out with the specific magazines that you intend to use.
Of the two M1 carbines that I have fired with softpoints, one seems to fail to feed about once every 30-50 rounds; the other one fails to feed about once every hundred and fifty rounds.
Congratulations on a great little gun.
Reloading for the Carbine is fairly easy . I settled on Win 296 ( .3 grns below book max ) and Remington SP’s. No significant feeding issues with 3 Carbines using those handloads or factory Corbon DPX. Had some trouble with the old Speer HP’s but it is probable that I was loading them too long.
