You are right about hooking a person, I’ve had 2 friends that are not target shooters fire in these matches and they loved it. Both want M1’s now.
Having shot 3 position smallbore, NRA highpower, 10 meter air rifle, etc.; I feel the CMP Garand matches are some of the most enjoyable matches I’ve competed in. My17 year old son shoots in them with me and wants us to go to Camp Perry next year. It may take a lot of work but what a good problem to have!
