CMMG Upper issue

I’m not on here to trash a company, but I am here to share my very recent experience up to this point.

I recently purchased a CMMG MOD4SA Lower, and what was said to be a CMMG 14.5" w/ Fixed Phantom flash hider Upper setup from a my favorite local shop. I felt that I had read plenty about this company and really like the fit and finish of the upper and lower.

Last night I was looking for the barrel markings on the upper and couldn’t find them anywhere. I looked up a discussion about them and even noticed on their website that they state that Barrels are engraved CMMG MPC 5.56 NATO 1:7. This got me concerned if I even have a CMMG with the 1/7 setup. I did notice some people talking about the bargain bin ones that they sold w/o markings, and some just without them, so I figured I’d get the story right from the horse’s mouth.

Today I called CMMG and when I finally got through I talked to a nice and helpful lady. (and I do wish I had gotten the lady’s name) She told me that there were some uppers sold w/o markings. Some where just made that way, some were blems, and some where bargain bin items. I was then told that only someone at the factory could ID if it was a CMMG. I wanted to know what to look for, but was told I wouldn’t be able to ID it.

Then came the coup de grâce… The lady told me that even though it is most likely a CMMG… they could not warranty this upper if need be. I’m not planning on breaking anything, but I did buy this understanding that CMMG has lifetime warranty on their stuff… just not the stuff they didn’t mark. Anyone else in this boat or hear of this?

I think you should go back to the shop that sold it to you and get a refund on the upper. If he is selling it as a CMMG upper then he should have some proof that it is one. After you get the refund go order a BCM.

I did leave that part out, (not on purpose).

I called the shop and told the owner all of this. He has asked me not to fire / mess with it. He is contacting his distributor and will let me know on monday of the situation. He was upset of the situation and said he will most likely refund me or order me another upper on monday. He has the paperwork to back this up and was upset if it was a bargain bin item. He didn’t pay for bargain bin stuff. I’ll let you know what happens.

The CMMG lady may have been nice, but I question whether she was helpful. Someone should have been able to get you an answer on whether you have a CMMG upper or not. Good luck on getting to the bottom of this.

I don’t know if this will be any help in identifying your upper, but CMMG complete uppers (?sometimes) have a “L” engraved on the rear of the rear takedown pin lug, and a “M” engraved on the front of the upper just above the gas tube hole.

Regards.

Look under the handguards, between the FSB, and the receiver.

This^^^^

…and never speak of “fit and finish” again. These things are meaningless.

Ok, first off. I did look under the hand guards… no dice. While playing with it a bit more I then noticed something that I should have noticed at the shop. There were no M4 feed ramps. This was now a larger concern than warranty for me and it prompted me to call and inform my shop. The shop owner called back a bit later and told me to bring it in to swap it out with one that he has that was marked. Now I have one that has all the features that it should. He said he is going to exchange the unmarked one with a marked one through CMMG. So now I’ve got the setup that I went in to purchase with the warranty and all. There is one problem though. This upper and lower are loose together. A bit more play/slop than I would like, and I hate to have to use an accuwedge or use an o-ring in the front. I guess that is what I get for being picky. (m4 feed ramps just make me feel good) :sarcastic:

Thanks for the info guys… yes even the guy from the 101st Pukin’ Chickens j/k

Airborne!

Who cares(besides you)?

You arent going to find anybody on this site that really cares about a little slop. It doesnt affect the function of the gun at all.

Now go shoot the shit out of it.

LT Shea, if you can’t fit a .020 feeler gage in the gap it’s within spec.

Actually the gage is inserted at the pivot pin and rear take down pin area. YOu must also pull the upper to either side when checking. So it’s not just about using the feeler gage.

Thanks IG, I remember your post from long ago about this but forgot the detail of checking at the pins. Thanks for keeping us straight around here brother.

I might actually dig those feeler gauges out then, cause this one has more than I’m use to. I’m ok with a little play. My issued colts had tons of play and it really never bothered me until I put a rail on them. My personal Stag and Sig have/had none and I’ve gotten to like the solid feel when holding the hand and forward grips… that’s all. Thanks for the info.
