Hey Ya’ll! First post! My name is Jonathan… I didnt see a place to introduce yourself so i’ll just jump right in!
I just bought my first AR… Its a CMMG Carbine with a sig barrel and a high picitanny allen screwed high gas block. After extensive research I really want to add either the MI 1 or 2 piece FF hand guard on it. As of now I have the MBUS gen 2 front sight on the gas block and after some research do not like what I have read about that set up. A lot of talk about heat issues which makes perfect sense to me…
Do you guys know if the FF hand guard will line right up with my gas block if I remove the little metal retainer on the back of the gas block that holds the regular plastic hand guard in place? I want to have a solid rail running all the way from the back to the front of the gun… If not is there a way to move my gas block back a few inches so they are flush? MI not answering customer service line or I would just ask them!
You could always just get a lo pro gas block and a 1 piece FF rail that attaches to the existing barrel nut. That is what I would do, unless you really like having your MBUS on the GB.
EDIT: you can’t just move a gas block in one way or the other, there is a port drilled in to the barrel that mates up with the GB which sends gas down your gas tube to your gas key on your bolt carrier.
The installation is not really the issue. I just want to know if the GB will line right up to the hand guard or if there will be a space in between the 2. If a space does anyone have a picture of there set-up? I dont know if it would look funny with a 1" space between hand guard and GB
EDIT: Thank you. so moving the GB is not an option.
^This^…now is a great time to switch to a more usable set up such as an 11", 12" or 13" Free Float Handguard. Swap that gas block out for a low profile unit then add a Troy/VTAC Alpha or Centurion C4 both of which use your factory barrel nut making for super easy install.
I will consider this option. I would really like to keep my high GB since I payed extra for it and it came installed already on the gun. I will keep trying to get in touch with MI about the dimensions and what it would look like. I should have just bought a better BUFS then I wouldnt be spending so much to get this thing where I want it! :bad:
A DD Omega is made to line up with a standard FSB, so it should work with that one. However, as others have said, ditch the CMMG bolt-on and switch to a low-profile with a rail system over it. I would not be comfortable with any non-pinned gas block that wasn’t under some sort of rail system. Even then, I would prefer the gas block be pinned.
Magpul recommends you don’t use their sights on gas block rails (heat issues). For the cost of a metal front sight to use your existing set up, you could get a low pro gas block and put your Magpul on your new free float rail, and solve three problems at once.
I went with the 2 piece MI Gen 2 free float carbine length only 9oz . For me personally there wasn’t much of a reason why I should get a mid length free float barrel and change gas blocks quite yet. I will just run the MBUS at the end of my new hand guard and problem solved for now! Thanks guys. If I don’t like the way the high gas block looks I will get a low profile one and make sure I get it mated right up with the FF hand guard!
It’s not about looks, it’s about running your support hand as far forward as possible to control the weapon (carbine length hand guard is less than ideal), and having the longest sight radius possible for your irons (and not accidentally burning your hand on the gas block, and not melting your sight).
