CMMG 5.5" .22 TEST upper

Got the test upper today.
I slapped a suppressor on it and loaded four 25 round mags. I was shooting in my basement so it isn’t sighted in yet. Strickly a function test.
100 rounds fired as fast as I could pull the trigger. ZERO fasilures! I am stoked!

Here is the upper as received:

Upper on one of my SBR lowers with suppressor:

Upper after my changes:

CMMG 5,5" .22 upper
Midwest Industries T-Series 7" Free Float
Midwest Industries Low Profile folding BUIS front and rear
Primary Arms Reflex Green Dot
TAC65 Suppressor with a .215 spacer

The sights and Reflex work great together. With the sights folded, I can clearly see the dot optic.
With the sights deployed, I can easily see the irons. They are above the optic when deployed. Perfect for this build.

I wanted a nice build that looked good, function well, was lite weight, and didn’t break the bank.
This fills that very nicely.
Weighs in at 5.8 lbs. with the suppressor, unloaded.

I will be following up with a range report.

Thanks for posting this!
I was getting close to pulling the trigger on a Nordic upper, but have held off since they A) don’t offer a short barrell upper, nor will they cut one for me
B)wont sell it to me without their handgaurd.
So I just couldn’t drop $450 (10% sale) then need a new handguard & have to send the barrell off for another $80-$100 cut/rethread. A $700 22 upper BEFORE suppressor just aint right!
What are these uppers going to cost & will there be any other lenght (say 7" range?)
Thanks!
PS will you do a test to see how many rounds you can go before it needs cleaning/starts having FTF,etc

At this time I know CMMG is planning on 5.5" and 10.5". I also know they have an outside guy that cuts custome length barrels for them.
I just lined a guy up for an 11.5". The barrels have to be cut, crowned and re finished. Not sure of the cost but it’s not an arm and leg.
What I like and what we talked about from the beginning was a short barrelled upper that would run with no tweaks or modifications by the end user.
Barrels will be offered seperately for guys already owning a CMMG .22 bolt. Uppers without bolts, barrel collar combo’s, and complete uppers with hand guard options.
We just need to make sure everything is good to go.
I actually pulled a CMMG bolt from my M4 LE .22 and run it in the short barrelled upper. Ran great with no changes.
It’s a definite winner for the SBR and pistol guys.

That’s a great looking little sbr Dave! Sounds like CMMG has another winner.

do you know if CMMG plans to sell completed 22lr pistols?

Yes they do plan on selling complete pistols. Hopefully, now that the Holidays are past, things will move along faster.
Shot Show should be real interesting!

alright… i know what I’m saving up for!!

Now… the hard part… how do I get it into CA…

I know Element Arms is handling CA sales of complete rifles for CMMG.

I would love to see this upper with a 7.5" barrel so that normal 7" hand guards could be used while unsuppressed. I have an SBR’d lower that is dying for one…

7.5" is not impossible. Mine is a test unit. We had hoped the 5.5" would keep high velocity subsonic, but it does not for me.
Oringinally we spoke of a 5.5", 7.5", and 10.5".
What the final call will be is up in the air.
I know there will be an ultra short, like the 5.5" and a 10.5". Could be a 7.5". I convinced them these would sell and from the input I’m getting, it looks like they will.
Another great thing about them is, if you already have a dedicated CMMG upper, you can buy these without the bolt using your existing bolt.
No modification is necessary changing from a long barrel to a short barrel.
Dave

where are things at on getting these out for sale?

Pretty sweet gun there!

How well did it run without the can, or did you try that?

What type of ammo were you using?

Thanks

BP

With a 5.5" barrels there will be some end users that will still need to do some sring tuning because of so many different kinds of hammer springs.
I have used a spring scale on many brands of hammer springs and they are all over the place with the strengths and a spring that may be just a little too strong will cause some short stroking with the shorties.
If CMMG realy wants a challenge lets see them make 4.5" barrels that will work with the kits and not need any spring mods.
5" and less is the magic length to keep the bulk pack ammo subsonic
but then sometimes some spring tuning is needed to get them reliable.
Many end users wonder why a 4.5 to 5.5 upper will run good on one lower they have but has cycle problems on another,
The trigger group strength is what can slow down the bolt and cause the problems so a dedicated lower that is tuned to run a 22 upper and other caliber uppers is the way to go.
Another problem that many overlook is a bolt that may be hitting a bolt hold back that stick up too high and will cause short stroking.

Makes sense my friend. I’ve never had luck with keeping High Velocity sub sonic even in a 4.5" PacLite on my Ruger 22/45. I don’t know why unless the suppressor is picking up on velocity.
I agree with the hammer springs. I had one that was real strong compared to others.
However, the CMMG 5.5" upper has run on 3 different lowers. Spikes, RRA, and Bushmaster with no changes. It also runs in my 16" the same as my 5.5".

Redtazdog, I’ll be getting a 5" barrel from Clint. Maybe it will keep rounds subsonic. I’m really looking forward to seeing how accurate it will be.
Dave

New hammer springs VS well broke in used springs can sometimes make a difference I have found over the last 20 years of playing with the 22 kits.
You will like Clints barrel as I have a few myself and they are good
shooters.
