Hey guys…new to this particular forum and wanting to say first off…nice forum you all have here. Tons of good info, and great place to post.
I recently bought a CMMG stainless steel version of the .22lr conversion for my Colt AR, and as i was getting ready to use it for the first time, I noticed that the extractor retaining pin looks to be sticking out significantly. Looks like it could easily etch out a groove in the inside of my upper. Wondering if this was normal or not. Can any of you confirm or deny this for me?
Any thoughts on the matter at all would be greatly appreciated. Pictures would be even better. Thanks in advance!
I just looked at mine and the pin does not stick out like the one in your pictures. Unless someone else disagrees, I would think you could take a punch and try to tap the pin in further.
I tried to do so, only to find out that the pin is bottomed out almost onto the rail. It’s a tight sqeeze. After careful disassembly, I discovered that the only way the pin is held in place is by that ever-so-slightly smaller hole that it exits at the top. The side away from us in the picture had a very small lip at the end of the tapered hole that keeps it from coming out any further. This simply means you cannot file/cut/modify the top of the pin in any way, or else it will obviously just pop up even higher to fill any void that was left on the modification to the pin you just made.
Thank you for the reply tho bro. If I get enough people to confirm if this is defective, I’ll be calling CMMG later this afternoon.
So after I emailed them back and forth most of the day about this, they continued to tell me it was normal. Even though I strongly urged to receive a replacement, they simply replied “That is how it is suppose to look.” and not another word.
So I figured that maybe I was being a little paranoid and headed out anyway. Shot out 10 rounds, pulled the bolt out and…
I’m irate now. It’s a shame that it took me etching out my upper receiver to prove a point. I’ll be talking to a superior tomorrow. Any of you ever looked into your upper to see if it has did the same to yours? Extremely disappointed in this company.
It’s reassuring to at least see that i’m not the only one that has a pin sticking out so far, although i’m quite surprised that you haven’t had any contact issues. Might just be within the last couple 10ths of the millimeter that make a difference.
Appreciate all the replies so far guys…keep um comin. I’m sure there’s more of you out there with this same conversion kit. Pictures are definitely welcome too!
Hit it with a file, stone, or a dremmel and be happy. I have one that I have re built 4 times. I had to replace the extractor right off the bat. Then the chamber adaptor cracked, the slide end plate cracked, and then the recoil spring went tits up. You’re bound to have issues with a unit like this. If something was broken I could see your gripe with CMMG, but a pin thats .001 too long is something that you can remedi yourself.
After all is said and done, it sounds like the best that they can do is offer a roll pin instead of the the rod to be used in it’s place. Apparently it was used on their older kits. They claim that it will not stick out as far.
As far as warranty issues, they are telling me that the kit is functioning correctly and that it looks to still be in spec, so warranty work would not be offered.
Not sure how thrilled I am with the outcome, but after both the rep and manager are telling me that this is normal, I’m starting to question my own sanity. Thanks for the replies all. Replies, pics and thoughts are still welcome!
Does anyone who owns or has used this bolt have any pictures of your upper? I would like to see if anyone could take some shots of their upper right behind the extractor port…the same spot my scratches are showing up. I would like to see if anyone else has the same wear marks. I know there are a bunch of u out there…let see some pics guys!
If it’s longer than you would like–shorten it. Angst goes away.
I had a CMMG unit for a while and got tired of clearing malfunctions. Plus another problem I never quite figured out. Went to a S&W 15-22 which I should have done in the first place. When I shoot it my thoughts are not how much it cost but how well it works and how much I like it.
Over 20K through my CMMG M4 LE with a hand full of FTE’s.
Biggest issues I ever had were the BHOA–Trim two coils off the bolt catch spring-- and Black Dog mags having too long feed lips causing FTE’s in the charging handle. Trim them back and they work fine.
My other three CMMG uppers work just as well. Just don’t have as many rounds down them.
Another thing I like about the stainless CMMG bcg is the fact that I use the same bolt in 5.5", 6.5", 7.5", 10.5", 11.5", 16", and 20" with no changes to recoil springs ect.
