Clinking Noise when I Charge my Ar with New Forend

Hello all,
Today my new troy Alpha rail arrived in the mail, and I immediately got down to installing it. I finally finished without any real hitches, but when I assembled my rifle and charged the handle, there is a very loud high pitched clink (and it sort of draws out for awhile). Any ways, to be sure that was the sound of my new forend, I grabbed it with my support hand and charged the rifle, and did not hear the sound.

Guys, I know that my rifle is correctly headspaced and what not, and it has always worked fine.

I would think that a very loud and distinctive clinking noise would be a product drawback in one of the many reviews I have read. WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT?? I would really appreciate some input.

Did you remove the gas tube during the install?

^ this. If so did you check to make sure the BCG slid in and out of the gas tube port, try it without CH. Is the new rail allowing the gas tube to align freely out of the upper receiver? Check to see if it’s making abnormal contact. I would be willing to assume your issue is somewhere in the above.

Some tube rails make that sound…sometimes. Sounds like a tuning fork right?

My old 3-gun rifle has a JP tube up front that would make that sound when dropping the bolt/running the charging handle on an empty chamber. It stopped doing it eventually, I have no idea why it stopped though. BCG always ran in and out like butter, tube was perfectly straight in the key.

If you’re experiencing the same thing I did, it’s not the gas tube but simply some weird harmonics.

It may be harmonics like you said thopkins. Maybe. But I still must be sure that it isn’t.

I kind if thought that it might have something to do with the gas tube, but it seems aligned. I’ll do dome more testing on it the next opportunity I can. (Couple days probably)

It is very annoying, because even when I was simply dey firing the weapon, you could hear the clink.

Wait!! But if the free float rail isn’t even touching the gas tube/block assembly, then why would the sound stop when I touch the rail, if it was the tube??

In order to test gas tube alignment all you need to do is strip the BCG, insert the carrier only into your upper receiver and slowly ride it forward. If it binds or resists then the tube is misaligned.

This is what I was trying to say but IG did a much better job of saying it. ^ :o

In most case when a new rail is installed you should check this before you torque to spec if I am correct, I always do.

When I said tube I meant tube rail, I think it’s the same thing you are experiencing. I’d bet money on it. I’d do as IG suggests and check with a carrier without a bolt, make sure everything is tight, and then forget about it. How often will you be firing it or manipulating it that you’re hand isn’t on the rail? :wink:

I will check it out when I get home tomorrow, and I sure home I can fix it. I charge with my support hand so it would make a racket every time I charge or press the bolt hold open. :confused:

How much space is there between the gas block and the inside of the rail? Is it possible that they are hitting each other?

Both of my Troy tube rails (11" & 13") sounded like tuning forks when I installed them. They both stopped after some time, don’t know why but they did.

The block and the rail aren’t touching and they are both very solid, so I don’t think it’s probably that.

I’m glad it’s happening to others. (Sorry, but it makes me feel better)

I believe that Thopkins posted something similar, it doesn’t make sense why it would just go away though??

Once you catch on, it goes away.

I guess your other option is to strip the weapon down and look for any wear marks.

I’ve thought of that. It seems as though if a noise suddenly just stopped, that it would be the result of wear. I really don’t need that.

Also, is the rail supposed to be 100% flush with the receiver, or can there be an extremely small amount of space??
